New York Gets a Senator

Paterson is doing as expected according to reports yesterday. Rep.
Kirsten Gillibrand will be appointed to Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat. I’ve
been out this morning, but it becomes official at noon today, when Paterson
is expected to make the announcement.
The N.R.A. backed her to help her win her seat, and she’s not been exactly enthusiastic (h/t American Prospect)
about gay rights, but recently came out in favor of gay marriage, which her fans are trumpeting. TNR
has more. As gun owners, we stay miles away from the N.R.A., an ...
Few Committee Seats Left for Gillibrand
The Caucus —
When Kirsten Gillibrand makes her way from the House, across the Capitol Rotunda, to join the ranks of Senate Democrats, she will find slim pickings in terms of committee assignments. And yet, among the few vacancies still available, some are likely to hold huge appeal for the woman about to become the youngest senator. Senate Democrats earlier this week announced final committee assignments, with just a few slots left for the three senators who at that point had yet to take office: Michael F. Bennet who was sworn in on Thursday replaces Senator Ken Salazar of Colorado; Al ...

Gov. David A. Patterson will announce today that he has chosen her to replace Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, ending a tumultuous period of speculation about whether Caroline Kennedy would fill the Senate seat. The Times’s Danny Hakim and Nicholas Confessore have more details on Ms. Gillibrand and the governor’s decision: Ms. Gillibrand is ...
Gillibrand headed to the Senate
Political Animal —
GILLIBRAND HEADED TO THE SENATE.... I've been reluctant to write a post about Gov. David Paterson's decision regarding New York's Senate vacancy, in large part because of his capacity to change his mind. Sure, it looks like he's about to appoint Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) to the seat, but maybe Paterson will throw us an 11th-hour curve-ball? Apparently not . Paterson made the offer, Gillibrand has accepted, and the announcement will be made in about an hour. Ms. Gillibrand is largely unknown to New Yorkers statewide, but is considered an up-and-coming and forceful ...
Gillibrand Needs to Change Her Stance on Immigration
Open Left - Front Page —
Gov. Paterson has picked Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand to replace Hillary Clinton in the U.S Senate. As described by the New York Times earlier today, Gillibrand is "known for bold political moves and centrist policy positions." Gillibrand--endorsed by the National Riffle Association and the recipient of a high grade from an anti-immigrant group called NumbersUSA--is not an encouraging pick for the immigrant community. According to her website, Gillibrand opposes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and co-sponsored the Secure America through Verification and Enforcement (SAVE) Act in ...
