Is Kennedy's Loss Conservatives' Gain?
FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right —
More on this later on, but if as is widely anticipated, Kristin Gillibrand is named today as the junior senator from New York, this is not a terrific outcome for progressive Democrats. Gillibrand, statistically speaking, has been one of the more conservative Democrats in the House. Moreover, she is a somewhat proud conservative, being a member of the Blue Dog caucus. In a state like New York, which is capable of electing and re-electing a very liberal senator, that's a somewhat underachieving result for the Democrats. And I know the objection/counterargument: Gillibrand was representing a relatively conservative district in upstate New York; ...

Gov. David Paterson picked Kirsten Gillibrand to take Hillary Clinton's senate seat. She doesn't seem very gay-friendly: According to the Human Rights Campaign, she voted against the repealing of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” legislation, opposed legislation that would grant equal tax treatment for employer-provided health coverage for domestic partners, opposed legislation to grant same-sex partners of U.S. citizens and permanent residents the same immigration benefits of married couples and opposed legislation to permit state Medicaid programs to cover low-income, HIV-positive Americans before ...
Paterson picks Gillibrand
The Reaction —
By Michael J.W. Stickings (Updating my post from earlier today.) The "confusing and even embarrassing two-month ordeal," as the Times put it, is finally over. As expected, and at long last, New York Governor David Paterson has named Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand to fill Hillary's vacated spot in the Senate. Earlier, I suggested that Gillibrand, who represents a pro-Bush district, is "almost a Republican." Almost? I'd say she pretty much is, what with a 100% approval rating from the NRA, support for the Iraq ...
Gillibrand: When Good Policy Meets Good Politics
Riehl World View —
It's worth noting that NY Governor Paterson's selection of Kirsten Gillibrand to replace Clinton in the Senate is both a selfish political move by Paterson, as well as a sound and fair choice to represent New York state in the Senate. It's impossible to see it as anything other than win win, unless your a liberal blogger. Their basic irrelevance always shows up when elections are in mind. Obama certainly didn't go out of his way to align himself with them.
Now New York will have a Senator to represent the upstate area and presumably Paterson will have more friends in important places in his state-wide bid for re-election. Evidently Paterson, who is blind, can see ...

... Gov. Paterson has picked Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand to replace Hillary Clinton in the U.S Senate. As described by the New York Times earlier today, Gillibrand is "known for bold political moves and centrist policy positions."
