The Caucus — President Obama is wrapping up another full day in China, including meetings with Chinese President Hu Jintao followed up by a quick session with the news media. As The Times’s Edward Wong and Helene Cooper reported, neither Mr. Obama nor Mr. Hu took questions from reporters, but “ said in separate speeches that the two nations would work together to stabilize the teetering world economy, contain the dangers of climate change and prevent nuclear proliferation.” Mr. Obama followed up his time with the Mr. Hu by stopping by the Forbidden City and meeting with Chinese embassy employees and their families. The president also met with Wu Bangguo, the chairman ...

GOP still failing to capitalize
Political Animal — GOP STILL FAILING TO CAPITALIZE.... Plenty to chew on in the new WaPo /ABC poll . As the Senate prepares to take up legislation aimed at overhauling the nation's health-care system, President Obama and the Democrats are still struggling to win the battle for public opinion. A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows Americans deeply divided over the proposals under consideration and majorities predicting higher costs ahead. But Republican opponents have done little better in rallying the public opposition to kill the reform effort. Americans continue to support key elements of the legislation, including a mandate that employers provide health insurance to their ...

Post-ABC Poll: Those Who Understand Health Reform Support It, Those Who Don't Oppose It
Blue Virginia — I didn't see this in the online edition of the Post yet, but it's in the paper copy I got this morning. Check this out. *Of people who say "they have a good basic understanding of the changes being proposed to the health-care system," 56% support health reform and 43% oppose it. *Of people who say "the changes being proposed for the health care system are too complicated to have a good understanding," 38% support health reform and 57% oppose it. In short, people who say they understand health reform support it by a 13-point ...

The nature of the opposition
Political Animal — THE NATURE OF THE OPPOSITION.... A new CNN poll shows 46% of Americans support the health care reform proposal pending in Congress, while 49% are against it. The numbers are nearly identical to the new Washington Post /ABC News poll , which found 48% support, 49% opposition. But there's an underlying problem with the question -- nearly all of these polls fail to tell us why Americans like or dislike the proposal. It's similar to poll questions asking whether the public approves of President Obama's handling of the issue, and seeing the number drop below 50%. Is that because Americans want him to compromise more or less? Is he fighting too hard or not hard enough ...

A Closer Look At Polls on Health Care Reform
Liberal Values — The polls on support for health care reform must be taken with a grain of salt. Most recent polls such as the Washington Post-ABC News poll show a fairly even split. Many people are expressing opposition to things which are not actually in the proposed legislation based upon the scare tactics of the right wing. Steve Benen notes that a recent CNN poll broke down reasons for opposing the legislation. This showed “one in 10 oppose the bill because it is not liberal enough.” Steve concluded: Most of the time, it seems as if the conventional wisdom assumes critics of the reform plan are necessarily on the right. But the CNN poll helps ...

A center-left majority on health care reform
Political Animal — A CENTER-LEFT MAJORITY ON HEALTH CARE REFORM.... One of the more common talking points from opponents of health care reform lately is the notion that the effort just isn't popular among Americans. It's a little ironic for the right to cling to polls to make their case -- the public option polls extremely well, and they still hate it -- but there's some data that, at face value, suggests the opponents have a point. A recent USA Today/Gallup poll ...
