What Bush Left Out of His Flat Farewell
MoJo Blog Posts: mojo —
... After watching the speech on the White House website, I understood why. It was flat and short. Bush said little of interest. He dwelled mostly on 9/11 and the so-called war on terror, once again (and for the last official time) characterizing the invasion of Iraq as part of his effort to take "the fight to the terrorists." He suggested that although the Iraq war was the subject of "legitimate debate," there "can be little debate about the results. America has gone more than seven years without another terrorist attack on our soil." ...

America has turned its collective back on movement conservatism as we witnessed this tragedy unfold before our eyes. Obama has replaced it with hope and optimism and a chance to undo some of the harm his administration has caused with the help of the David Addington's and John Yoo's.
I found this reference rather interesting in his speech:
President Thomas Jefferson once wrote, ...

President Bush’s Final Address to the Nation
Flopping Aces —
... it’s difficult for many of us to see him go. As most of us who are old enough to know, change isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be and we know we will miss President Bush.
Tonight’s speech was a personal statement filled with the notes of class and grace that were woven throughout the address like the melody of a favorite song:

President Bush’s Final Address To Nation A Smash
California Conservative —
... Thursday night, I had the privilege of watching President Bush deliver his last speech as president. It was one of his finest speeches ever because he reminded people that we still live in a dangerous world. President Bush reminded us that his decisions on preventing another terrorist attack were the right decisions. Here’s a portion of the speech that jumped out at me: ...

Don't believe your lying eyes
Political Animal —
DON'T BELIEVE YOUR LYING EYES.... Presidents don't have to give televised farewell addresses at the end of their term. Indeed, George H. W. Bush didn't bother, preferring to let his record speak for itself. The son would have been wise to follow his father's example. Watching Bush's final speech as president , delivered from the White House's East Room last night, was an odd experience. It was both painful and dull, which usually don't accompany one another. Bush didn't seem particularly engaged with what he was saying, seeming to read the speech, rather than deliver it. ...
Just GOODBYE Already! FUCK!
Shakesville —
It's hard to choose the best part of President Mondo Fucko's farewell address last night, but I've got to go with this bit: The battles waged by our troops are part of a broader struggle between two dramatically different systems. Under one, a small band of fanatics demands total obedience to an oppressive ideology, condemns women to subservience, and marks unbelievers for murder. The other system is based on the conviction that freedom is the universal gift of Almighty God, and that liberty and justice light the path to peace.Wait—is he talking about ...

Bush, who listed the Iraq war as one of his efforts to combat terrorism, said he understands disagreement with some "tough decisions" he made, "but I hope you can agree that I was willing to make the tough decisions." More here. Full text and video of Bush's remarks are here. So whaddya think? Are you happy, sad, or whatever to see him go? ...

Dubya's Farewell The text of George W. Bush's Farewell Address : Fellow citizens: For eight years, it has been my honor to serve as your President. The first decade of this new century has been a period of consequence -- a time set apart. Tonight, with a thankful heart, I have asked for a final opportunity to share some thoughts on the journey that we have traveled together, and the future of our nation. Five days from now, the world will witness the vitality of American democracy. In a tradition dating back to our founding, the presidency will pass to a successor chosen by ...
The Rude Pundit — ... His shitty little farewell speech was the pathetic capper, a generic "Kiss my ass, America" that he could barely act conscious enough to make interesting. To a room filled with stinking corpses, Bush went through a rote recitation of one or two things that might be called accomplishments, including bringing the dying back to life and that he stood on rubble after 9/11. Everything else was the obligatory attempt at justification, but, like an actor in a role he despises and for which he was never suited in the first place, he couldn't even manage to act like he believed what he ...
The End of the Bush Presidency
Ross Douthat —
... It was appropriate, in a sense, that his farewall remarks echoed his expansive Second Inaugural, with its simple (and simplistic) vision of a world divided between freedom and tyranny, and a crusading America advancing the one and defeating the other. He was at home in that rhetoric; he's never seemed at home since. And as Chris Brose ...

The Bush Years: From “Accountability One” to Zero Accountability
Firedoglake —
I didn't watch the Bush valedictory. As it happens, I was at my gym, using one of the elliptical machines with the personal TV screens. I flipped to MSNBC, not mindful of the time, and then all of a sudden President Bush was on screen, mashed up, thanks to my iPod, with a Screeching Weasel song. The women using the machines next to mine shot me brief but clearly disdainful expressions. I changed the channel.
So I didn't see the speech. Read it if you feel so inclined. It's hard to remember, but in 2000 Bush's campaign plane was called ...

The President and Mrs. Bush have done their best to extend their hand to the Obama’s by welcoming them to the White House. President Bush took the highly unusual step of hosting a lunch for Obama with the ex-Presidents. His Administration also held a joint training session on homeland security with Obama’s incoming team.
If that were not enough President Bush devoted a portion of his farewell address on Thursday night to offer these kind words:
