Innaugural Speaker Rick Warren: Anti-Choice, Anti-Stem Cell Research, Anti-Marriage Equality. . . Anti-Obama?
Firedoglake —
Rick Warren of Saddleback Church has been tapped by Obama to give the inaugural invocation. WTF? Rick Warren? He's basically James Dobson in Dr Phil's goatee. In 2004 Warren declared that marriage, reproductive choice, and stem cell research were "non-negotiable" issues of Christian voters, yet those things were part of Obama's platform!

... an act of spiritual violence against lesbian and gay American citizens and a profound betrayal of the philosophy of inclusion and unity espoused by President-Elect Obama.
"The Presidential Inaugural Committee, at the direction of President-elect Obama...will organize an inclusive and accessible inauguration that...unites the nation around our shared values and ideals."
Shared values and ideals? Let's let Rick Warren speak for himself.

... Does Warren really think gay unions are like incest? No. Talking to Steve Waldman of BeliefNet, Warren offered a list of partnerships that he doesn't believe qualify for the term "marriage": a committed boyfriend-girlfriend relationship, "a brother and sister being together, an older guy marrying a child and a guy having multiple wives." ...

... traveling from Washington to Memphis where I'm spending Christmas week. Taking the "Oh, I do" in context, I heard Rick Warren reaffirming what he had just said: that "redefining 5,000 years of marriage" would lead to marraiges we would all find objectionable, like having multiple wives or marrying your sibling. I based that partly on how Warren says in the same interview that he has "no problem" with civil unions or domestic partnerships. I've since learned that Warren later " clarified " his remarks: I now see you asked about civil UNIONS -- and I responded by talking about ...

... (where you find the most thoughtful exchanges on present day religion), did an extended interview with Warren which has been hyped all over the blogosphere as an example of why we should all be screaming for Obama to disinvite Warren from the inaugural. The quote that got all the attention was when Warren said gay marriage would be on a par with marriage for incest, pedophilia and polygamy. And yes, I think that's off-base. Not up there are the scale of the whole God-sent-his-only-Son-to-die-on-a-cross bit, but weird nonetheless. But ...

... OK. I will now do the service the writer suggests by examining the clarifications Rick Warren made to his interview. The person who wrote the email is referring to the fact that after the Belief.net interview in question, Warren wrote back to Belief.net to "clarify" some of the things that he said in the interview. For example: ...
uggabugga — Rick Warren on sex: From the Beliefnet interview: (actually, clarifications offered a few days later by Warren) God, who always acts out of love and does what is best for us, thought up sex. Sex was God’s idea, not ours. Like fire, and many other things God gave us, sex can be used for good, or abused in ways that harm. The Designer of sex has clearly and repeatedly said that he created sex exclusively for husbands and wives in marriage. Whenever God’s parameters are violated, it causes broken hearts, broken families, emotional hurt and ...
