McCain, From the Vault
Swampland —
... this campaign ad from McCain's first congressional campaign. The ad was shot in 1982, when McCain was about 46 years old, which is roughly the same age Barack Obama is today. Like a high school English teacher, I suggest: Watch the clip below and think about the ways in which the presidential contest would be different today if Barack Obama and John McCain were the same age.

TNR TV: Fairbanks Ventures Into The 'Hillary Suite'
The Stump —
Yesterday I made it into the "Hillary Suite," an airy 11th-floor apartment downtown that serves as a staging ground, hospitality suite, and venting safe-space for all different stripes of pro-Hillary delegates. While I was there, I chatted with Christopher Nichols, a Hillary delegate from Menlo Park, California. "I would say 60 percent are rational and have moved in, and the other 40 percent still have their arms folded," he told me. Take a look below. Behind him, you'll see the suite's wall of Hillary signs (plus a donation box) next to the TV, which is often tuned to Fox News.

TNR TV: Scheiber and Fairbanks, Live From Denver
The Stump —
Live from the Democratic convention, TNR editors Noam Scheiber and Eve Fairbanks debate Hillary's speech: Did she go far enough in praising Obama? Will her supporters be convinced? And is the media being irresponsible by harping on this drama?
--The Editors More live coverage from Denver on TNR TV: - Fairbanks slips into the “Hillary
Suite,” ground zero for the still-not-over-it crowd, where she interviews a
diehard holdout.

TNR TV: Fairbanks Talks with Artur Davis
The Stump —
Artur Davis, an earnest young congressman from Alabama and a major early Obama backer,
is on everybody's short list
of buzzworthy up-and-coming Democratic leaders. Time magazine just named him one
of the convention's "Hotshots To Watch."
Today he has an important job to do in the arena: Be one of four speakers to
give a speech formally nominating Barack Obama. I caught up with him yesterday
outside Talk Show Row inside the Pepsi Center to gab about his ideal Joe Biden speech, what Obama has to accomplish this week, the fatal weakness of those
John McCain ads, and his favorite 2008 convention moment.

The Stump —
TNR Editor Franklin Foer chats with Senator Jeff Bingaman about what
Biden brings to the ticket, McCain's campaign strategy, and Obama's
balancing of healthcare and the environment. Regarding McCain's campaign tactics, Bingaman remarked: "I think we'll see the same sort of campaign that we saw against John Kerry."

TNR TV: Scheiber Interviews Jason Furman
The Stump —
TNR Editor Noam Scheiber sits down with Obama's Economic Policy Director, Jason Furman, to discuss Obama's "pragmatic" economic philosophy, values, the core differences between the candidates, and the big economic issue today. "The central economic problem-- is the economy working for you-- is greater today than it ever has been before," said Furman.

Sanford: McCain Doesn’t Talk About His POW Experience
Think Progress —
... Sandford’s view that McCain doesn’t like talking about his experience as a POW is laughable. McCain has a long history of not just discussing his POW experience, but bringing it up in conversations entirely unrelated to the subject. In addition, on the campaign trail, McCain often volunteers anecdotes from his POW experience in ...

Hit & Run —
McCain's Disgrace
Talking Points Memo —
The McCain campaign has been throwing around so much mud and smears in recent weeks that it's easy to miss just how ugly and shameful their character assassination of Rashid Khalidi is. This is an entirely respectable, highly respected scholar. To go further into making a case for him would only be to enable and indulge McCain's sordid appeal to racism. For McCain, personally, to compare Khalidi to a neo-nazi, it's just an offense McCain should never be forgiven for. It's right down in the gutter with Joe McCarthy and the worst of the worst. Khalidi is in this new McCain set piece for one reason -- as a generic Arab, to spur the idea that Obama is foreign, friendly with ...
"Beyond dirty campaigning... to something truly dishonorable."
Althouse —
Laying great emphasis on the treatment of Rashid Khalidi, John Judis condemns the McCain campaign: (Via Josh Marshall.) ADDED: More on Khalidi here: Mr. Khalidi, the Edward Said professor of Arab studies at Columbia, was born in Manhattan in 1948.... He taught at universities in Lebanon until the mid-’80s, and some critics accuse him of having been a spokesman for the Palestine Liberation Organization. Mr. Khalidi has denied working for the group, and says he was consulted as an expert by reporters seeking to understand it. He was an adviser to the Palestinian delegation during Middle East peace talks from ...
