As the post below indicates, I'm not convinced that Tom Daschle's future is substantially imperiled by his shoddy tax returns. Nor am I convinced that it should be. Few actually believe that Daschle meant to cheat the government out of a $100,000 in tax revenue at the cost of his future ...

The Daschle Problem
Matthew Yglesias —
By Brian Beutler
I don’t feel like the top job at the Department of Health and Human Services is such a complicated position that only Tom Daschle can do it, and in that regard, I think it would make some sense for Obama to keep Daschle in the White House and find somebody who isn’t blemished in the ways he is to run the agency.
But if I’m reading these two posts by Ezra Klein correctly, then it seems to me that if what you want most from Obama is decent, passable legislation, there’s a reasonable, though not clear-cut, case for Daschle, whereas if what you want most from Obama is a good-faith attempt to rid Washington of ...
2/2: First Geithner, Now Daschle?
Blogometer —
February 02, 2009 2/2: First Geithner, Now Daschle? Liberal bloggers were outraged by the news that Barack Obama 's nominee for HHS Sec., ex-Sen. Tom Daschle (D-SD), failed to pay more than $128K in taxes. Lefty bloggers are complaining that Daschle "embodies everything that is sleazy, sickly, and soul-less about Washington" and are describing his actions as "impossible to defend." A number of liberal bloggers are calling on Obama to withdraw Daschle's nomination, and some are floating ex-DNC Chair Howard Dean 's name as a potential replacement. However, others argue that Dean would not be an adequate replacement for Daschle, ...

... a few days ago, I think this is a good thing. I think Daschle would have been an immense asset in trying to get health care passed, and I do not take that lightly. I wasn't particularly happy with my last post on this topic -- when I wrote it, I was running out to have dinner with some friends -- so I thought I'd say a bit more about why. One of my hypotheses about Obama -- not something I think I have ...
