Daily Kos — ... Carl Hiaasen imagines a conversation between Rod Blagojevich and Satan. I'm still waiting for someone to come up with a funny take on this. Rick Santorum gives his .02 on what the next RNC chairman needs to do: The new chairman has to winsomely communicate our vision and build a nationwide team to deliver our message. Union Busting, Southern Style
BlondeSenseLA TIMES : The foreign nonunion auto companies located in the South have a plan to reduce wages and benefits at their factories in the United States. And to do it, they need to destroy the United Auto Workers. Last week, Senate Republicans from some Southern states went to work trying to do just that, on the foreign car companies' behalf. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Sen. Bob Corker ( R-Tenn.) and Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) -- representatives from states that subsidize companies such as Honda, Volkswagen, Toyota and Nissan -- first tried to force the UAW ...

Employees at Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and VWplants in the south should watch their own backs
Brilliant at Breakfast — I'm sure it's tempting for workers in the auto plants in the South who are getting paid at close to UAW levels to feel smug at the plight of their brethren in the rust belt. I wonder if they realize that the reason they get paid as well as they do, instead of the auto plants in which they work being the equivalent of American sweatshops, is because of UAW compensation levels. And I wonder if they realize how they are next in the crosshairs in the race to the bottom being conducted in the executive suites: ...

UAW Busting, Southern Style
Firedoglake — ... Barack Obama to construct a real solution. Democrats and even most Republicans understand that a nation that has already lost 2 million jobs this year cannot afford to put at risk 3 million more. What the economy needs now is rising wages so the country can get on the path of wage-driven consumption growth. That means stronger unions. Indeed, I believe eventually it will mean the unionization of the entire U.S. auto industry. (A version of this post was published in the Los Angeles Times.)

Chris Weigant: Make Wall Street Take The Same Deal The Autoworkers Get
Politics on HuffingtonPost.com — ... I've been waiting for someone to intelligently compare the two, and finally read the article I've been looking for this weekend. The Economic Case for Unions, (and how they help us all)
Newshoggers.com — ... which I figure explains a great deal of the Republican anger towards them. That legacy is a large part of what the non-unionized work force owes them. Most of the labor laws Wal-Mart is paying off former employees for violating wouldn’t even exist without the unions efforts. The second part of what non-unionized employees owe the unions is the competition they provide. Or perhaps that should be worded, the fear of competition they provide. From Cogitamus, this story from the LA Times: But what the foreign car companies want is to level ...
