McCain's getting more negative coverage
Michael Calderone's Blog —
I have a write-up of a Project for Excellence in Journalism study released this afternoon up on the homepage.
The good news for John McCain? He's now receiving as much attention from the national media as his Democratic rival. The bad news? It’s overwhelmingly negative.
Just 14 percent of the stories about John McCain from the conventions through the final presidential debate were positive in tone, according to a study released today, while nearly 60 percent were negative—the least favorable coverage of any of the 4 candidates on the ...
Pew Study PROVES Media in the Tank for Dems as Obama Camp Adopts "Hide Biden" Strategy
The Discerning Texan —
And...just in the last MONTH: Source: Pew Research Center - October 22, 2008 Gee, I wonder why everyone is so "convinced" that a single-digit race is "all over": The media coverage of the race for president has not so much cast Barack Obama in a favorable light as it has portrayed John McCain in a substantially negative one, according to a new study of the media since the two national political conventions ended. Press ...

Study: Coverage of McCain Far More Negative than Obama
PoliGazette —
A Pew study published Wednesday proves what most of us said for weeks: the elite media - New York Times, MSNBC, CNN and so on - are highly biased this year.
According to the study, coverage of Senator John McCain was two to three times more negative than coverage of Sen. Barack Obama.
Of all the 2,412 stories on John McCain that appeared in newspapers and cable news channels between the Republican convention and the last Presidential debate, 57% were decidedly negative in tone, while only 14% was positive. The remainder (29%) was fairly neutral.
At the ...
Plastic Truth
N/A —
McCain action figure acts boldly, goes negative, fumbles, has balls to blame polls and media for decline and fall from grace.
Moment of Truth or Rubicon of Dumb? “McCain’s coverage, though, went into a free fall after he initially declared that “the fundamentals of our economy are strong.“
Ya think?

Ad Week recently had a featured article on one of the most successful advertising campaigns in history.
But coverage of McCain has been heavily unfavorable—and has become more so over time. In the six weeks following the conventions through the final debate, unfavorable stories about McCain outweighed favorable ones by a factor of more than three to one—the most unfavorable of all four candidates—according to the study by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism.
For Obama during this period, just over a third of the stories were clearly positive in tone (36%), while ...
Where Did the Public Get the Idea that McCain is Running A Negative Campaign?
Flopping Aces —
... and watered that seed for months!
Obama has spent more money on negative ads than ALL of the ads run by John McCain. And yet the public is under the perception that McCain has run a negative campaign. General Colin Powell echoed that sentiment when he endorsed McCain.
So where did Powell and others get this idea?

Study: 4 Times More Negative Than Positive Reports About McCain
NewsBusters.org - Exposing Liberal Media Bias —
Want to talk media bias? A new study from the Project for Excellence in Journalism found that since the Republican National Convention, there have been four times more negative press reports about John McCain than positive ones. By contrast, during the same period, media coverage of Obama has been more positive than negative. Think this might be impacting voter perceptions? Here are the study's key findings (emphasis added): [C]overage of McCain has been heavily unfavorable—and has become more so over time. In the six weeks ...
Post election Introspection
Stubborn Facts —
Today we noted this report from the Pew Center for Excellence in Journalism.
But coverage of McCain has been heavily unfavorable—and has become more so over time. In the six weeks following the conventions through the final debate, unfavorable stories about McCain outweighed favorable ones by a factor of more than three to one—the most unfavorable of all four candidates
I would encourage everyone to read this summary. Among the interesting findings:
-Obama's positive coverage post-coverage centered on his lead in the polls (i.e. "everyone loves a winner)
-McCain's ...

... So I have a proposal. I wish to replicate the Project for Excellence in Journalism study for our local newspaper. I need a few hours of volunteer time and access to the Times' archives for the last two months. I propose using the public library for the archive. Send an email to the comment box if you wish to participate. I am particularly hoping one or two liberal readers to join this project. We would replicate this for Obama/McCain, Coleman/Franken/Barkley and Bachmann/Tinklenberg. I would hope to finish the project quickly, though finishing it in time for the elections ...

George Stephanopoulos: Media Biased Because McCain 'Not Doing So Well'
NewsBusters.org - Exposing Liberal Media Bias —
Media biased against McCain because his campaign is not doing well. That was George Stephanopoulos’ rationalization on the November 3 edition of "The View." Elisabeth Hasselbeck questioned Stephanopoulos about the media’s pro-Obama bias. With studies out demonstrating the media has been clearly far more pro-Obama in its coverage, Stephanopoulos could not dispute the facts. Instead the former Clinton adviser spun it as a result of the faltering McCain campaign. If they are not doing so well in the polls, they will "get more negative stories."
Earlier in the segment, Barbara Walters ...
A Third Party Threat To Obama In 2012?
Open Left - Front Page —
One potential 2012 scenario I have been considering for the past week is that his biggest threat to re-election in 2012 might come from a third-party, rather than from Republicans. This threat would be in the mold of a more populist and likeable Michael Bloomberg, or a more informed and less insane Ross Perot, rather than a minor party such as the Greens or Libertarians rising from obscurity. He would be male, white, extremely wealthy, have no real downticket support, center-right (possibly hard right-wing on economics), and fueled by corporate, big media, bi-partisan elitist, punditry disgust with Barack Obama. I term this ...
The Time To Make Requests Is Now
Open Left - Front Page —
When the final totals are finished early next month, Obama will win the White House, Democrats will number in the high 250's in the House, and the high 50's in the Senate. Given these numbers, we should be able to pass a helluva lotta legislation. As such, while I know the urge to savor victory and give Obama the benefit of the doubt is massive, right now is actually the time to make requests and / or demands on what sort of legislation we want passed, not the time to sit back and smile. ...
AJR Editor: Obama Was Citizen Kane, McCain Was Beverly Hills Chihuahua
NewsBusters.org - Exposing Liberal Media Bias —
Every time a Democrat wins the presidential race, the deniers of liberal media bias insist that the Democrat drew better media coverage only because he was the superior candidate. But Rem Rieder, editor of the American Journalism Review, really exaggerated the difference between Barack Obama and John McCain. To him, one was a classic for the ages, and the other was a laughable piece of effluvia: "Citizen Kane no doubt got much more positive coverage than Beverly Hills Chihuahua." He proclaimed McCain "more than earned his negative coverage" since he "half-heartedly clung to the outdated ...
Dem Leadership Will Not Voluntarily Pressure Conservative Dems
Open Left - Front Page —
As an addendum to last night's discussion on forcing the Democratic leadership to pressure conservative Democrats, it feels necessary to make the case that the Democratic leadership in both Congress and the White House will not voluntarily pressure conservative Democrats. The entire Democratic Party system is rigged to be gentle toward conservative Democrats. If any pressure comes from the leadership, we are going to have to force them to do it.
More in the extended entry. Democrats have spent over twenty years devising a party system that caters to conservative Democrats at all costs. They can ...
