humano FDR's Federal Writers Project, when applied to the Net, would be a very interesting program indeed. Bloggers for The Fed, anyone?
Do we really want a new Federal Writers Project?
Betsy's Page —
Now that Obama is self-consciously echoing Franklin D. Roosevelt in his approach to our current economic bad times, everyone has his hand out to get some of the new New Deal. And the latest is Mark Pinsky of the New Republic who argues that the federal government should set up a new Writers Project similar to the Federal Writers Project of the New Deal. And who are those unemployed writers who would get jobs in this new FWP? You guessed it! He is thinking of all those journalists who have lost jobs as media organizations contract. Today, there are many dislocated "old media" ...

... . This was the New Deal project which provided funding for works which were primarily of a leftwing nature. And any current version of this government program is likely to have the same political ideology as its predecessor. Pinksy explains his dream of subsidizing unemployed journalists (emphasis mine): ...

... ] Further to my post re Timothy Egan below, Mark Pinsky over at The New Republic says that, what with all the newspaper lay-offs, it's time for a new Federal Writers Project : Today, there are many dislocated "old media" journalists from newspapers, radio, and television on the street here I declare my personal interest, as one of them who could provide a skilled pool to staff a new FWP... Journalism Bailout
The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan —
By Patrick Appel Mark Pinsky wants one: This time, the [Federal Writers Project] could begin by documenting the ground-level impact of the Great Recession; chronicling the transition to a green economy; or capturing the experiences of the thousands of immigrants who are changing the American complexion. Like the original FWP, the new version would focus in particular on those segments of society largely ignored by commercial and even public media. It doesn't sound like a good idea for the government to decide what ...
"Resurrect" the Federal Writers' Project?
Hit & Run —
You can't fault Mark I. Pinsky for dreaming. The award-winning religion writer was laid off from the Orlando Sentinel in July, and his essay for the New Republic was probably more of a vehicle for his frustrations than a sincere policy proposal (unlike some of the other people demanding big money from Uncle Sam's supposedly bottomless pockets). Either way, Pinsky's essay is worth reading in full despite its lack of a compelling argument: Any federal effort to put back to work the hundreds of thousands thrown out of work in the ...
