“I Don’t Know” is No Answer.
The Sundries Shack —
The Timothy Geithner story has driven right through strange and is heading full-tilt toward Ridiculousville. Byron York has a report today at National Review Online that boggles my mind. Geithner was asked last week about why he didn’t pay any withholding tax for four years. His answer, basically, was “I don’t know”. What senators learned at the gathering was not only that Geithner had failed to pay self-employment taxes during his time at the International Monetary Fund. They learned that the IMF had repeatedly informed Geithner, as it had all its employees, of his ...

Stop the TAX CHEAT from becoming the TAX COLLECTOR President-elect Obama is entitled to nominate whoever he feels will best fit the bill on his cabinet but he really should withdraw Timothy Geithner’s nomination for Treasury Secretary. Geithner, by now I'm sure you know, recently had to pay almost $43,000 in back taxes and interest because he's a TAX CHEAT. How can Obama seriously be for reform if he hypocritically appoints a TAX CHEAT to become what is essentially the top TAX COLLECTOR in the land? ... Treasury Secretary. The debate promises to be brief. By unanimous consent, the Senate has allotted just one hour to Democrats and one hour to Republicans; after that, the Geithner nomination will come to a vote, and Geithner is expected to be confirmed by a wide margin. Why such a brief debate over the nomination when even one Senate Democrat termed Geithner's tax problems " completely unacceptable "? (To read about those tax issues, go here , and here , and here , and here .) The reason is, Republicans have decided not to fight. One key ...
The Democrats’ Patriotism Deficit

... Oops, another exception. Timothy Geithner, the man nominated by President Obama to oversee the federal treasury and the Internal Revenue Service, fell into the patriotism gap when he failed to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes while in the employ of the International Monetary Fund. Just for good measure, he employed an immigrant housekeeper who briefly lacked proper work papers. His persistent tax filing and payment problems go back over 15 years. Surely he has a good excuse, right? ...
