Editors: Due Diligence on Geithner

... the facts. Us, too. [image] [image] [image] [image] [image] Having been advised of the oversight in his 2003 and 2004 tax filings, Geithner neglected to conduct even the most basic due diligence by checking his 2001 and 2002 taxes. Geithner s explanation that he was not aware of these additional problems until November 2008 which is to say, until his nomination to the Obama cabinet was imminent seems to us less than credible. Were Geithner s tax mistakes common? Byron York s report today suggests not. Such errors by high-ranking IMF officials appear quite rare. Sen. ...

A Chequer-Board of Nights and Days —
So, contrary to the assertions made by Team Obama, it actually is not the case that most people in Tim Geithner's position failed to pay their taxes on time and in full. So, that's another weak excuse gone down the drain. Back to our original question: How is it that the supposed future Secretary of the Treasury can get away with both holding high office and having failed to pay his taxes on time and in full, when the same behavior, on the part of ordinary Americans, would land them an audit, jail or both?

... satisfying. He can t offer a specific reason, says another source familiar with what went on at the meeting. He doesn t really have an answer. He just didn t know. So why did Geithner not pay the taxes in question? There is no obvious answer. It could have been pure oversight a common mistake, as the Obama transition team has called it. But there are questions about how common the mistake actually was; an IMF official, while not commenting on Geithner s case in particular, has said that instances of non-payment of taxes by IMF staffers is relatively rare. If Geithner s ...

Tim Geithner’s confirmation hearing just went full-on stupid. He’s gone from saying that he made an everyday mistake ( not true ) to pleading cluelessness ( wait…what? ). Now he’s decided to take a hint from his boss and toss someone else under the bus. His latest excuse for not paying taxes for four years is that it’s all the fault of Turbo Tax . The guy who is going to run the IRS freely confessed that he doesn’t know how to use off-the-shelf tax preparation software. Allah mildly calls shenanigans on Geithner’s newest excuse and muses about ...
Treasury Secretary Geithner
The Corner on National Review Online —
... Geithner to be Treasury Secretary. The debate promises to be brief. By unanimous consent, the Senate has allotted just one hour to Democrats and one hour to Republicans; after that, the Geithner nomination will come to a vote, and Geithner is expected to be confirmed by a wide margin. Why such a brief debate over the nomination when even one Senate Democrat termed Geithner's tax problems " completely unacceptable "? (To read about those tax issues, go here , and here , and here , and here .) The reason is, Republicans have decided not to ...
