New McCain Ad Targets Obama Aide’s Freddie, Fannie Connections

Latest spot skewers the Democratic nominee, goes after Franklin Raines, one of Obama’s economic advisers.
“Under Raines, Fannie Mae committed ‘extensive financial fraud.’ Raines made millions. Fannie Mae collapsed.” ...
McCain: 'Advice'
Ben Smith's Blog —
McCain comes back at Obama with a shot at his experience and, perhaps more important, an attempt to muddy the waters on the question of who's being advised by lobbyists and insiders, a front on which McCain has been hit hard lately. It cites the report that Obama was taking advice from former Fannie Mae chief Franklin Raines.
Airing "nationally."
McCain Ad: "Advice"
Ace of Spades HQ —
Not hard hitting enough, I'm afraid. More please. Show all of Obama's corrupt advisers. Still, at least they're starting....
And McCain does a ranging shot on Obama's ties to the Fannie Mae mess.
RedState: Conservative News and Community —
Oh, yes, there's more.
Much more.
Via Ace, who
wants the full broadside. As do I, but there's a rhythm to such
things.

PS: Hey, remember the
Countrywide loan payola thing that Senator Dodd was in on? Yup,
Franklin Raines was one of those guys. So was James Johnson,
who was also tight with Senator Obama's campaign until he got
caught out.
Small world, huh?

Dayum! Go, McCain :)
Sister Toldjah —
As we’d all hoped, Team McCain is hitting Obama hard today on his Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac connections, and noting McCain’s attempts to resolve these issues before they blew up like they did this week. First, at a campaign stop in Cedar Rapids, Iowa:
Two years ago I warned this Administration and Congress that regulations for our home loan agencies, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, needed to be fixed.
But nothing was done.
Senator Obama talks a tough game on the financial markets but the facts tell a different story. He took more money from Fannie and Freddie than ...
McCain Ad Hits Obama By Suggesting His Leading Adviser Is (Black) Former Fannie Mae Head
TPMDC —
The McCain campaign is up with a new ad that hits Obama on the economy, by attacking Obama for his associations with former Fannie Mae head Franklin Raines (who happens to be black):
The ad suggests that Raines is Obama's leading adviser. "Who advises him?" the narrator says. "The Post says it's Franklin Raines, for 'advice on mortgage and housing policy.'"
The actual quote from the Post, according to the McCain campaign's release, says merely that Raines has "taken calls from Barack Obama's presidential campaign seeking his advice on mortgage ...
McCain hits Raines in new ad, “Advice”
Hot Air » Top Picks —
McCain hits Raines in new ad, “Advice” posted at 6:35 pm on September 18, 2008 by Ed Morrissey Send to a Friend | printer-friendly John McCain has decided to attack Barack Obama on his connections to Fannie Mae CEO Franklin Raines. With Obama attempting to pass off McCain as a newcomer to the Hope-Change Express, McCain points out Obama’s complete lack of economic experience — and points out that his adviser has a great deal of responsibility for Fannie Mae’s insolvency: Obama has no background in economics. Who advises him? The Post says it’s Franklin Raines, for “advice on mortgage and housing policy.” ...
"Advice"
Hotline On Call Part Deux —
New John McCain ad to be televised nationally, notes that former Fannie Mae chief Franklin Raines advised Barack Obama's campaign on housing and mortgage matters -- and that the Dem nom "has no background in economics." Wait, does McCain? No. None. Zip. Zero. By his own admission.
McCain Comes Off His Heels With Raines Ad
Weekly Standard Blog —
I was just about to opine about how Palin's interview with Sean Hannity tonight should include Franklin Raines' and Jim Johnson's names no fewer than 10 times each, perhaps with visual aids depicting their proximity to the Fannie/Freddie mess and relative importance in the Obama campaign.
There's no excuse for him getting a pass on those associations while he's out trying to make electoral hay of the mess his buddies had a part in creating.
This ad is a follow-up to an aggressive speech from McCain today.
For those keeping track ...

McCain Ties Obama To Fannie Mae Collapse as Obama Pretends Franklin Raines Wasn't an Adviser
JammieWearingFool —
Smears! Racist! Uh, actually, the truth. Maybe some day the media will get their heads out of their asses and dig a little further into the connection. It's not as if it's too difficult to tie Obama with Franklin Raines. Just Google it! Remarkably, Raines pretends to not have any connection to Obama ...
McCain pops up new ad tying Obama to former Fannie CEO
Jonathan Martin's Blog —
This has a news-of-the-day video press release vibe to it, but we'll know just how much Team McCain wants to tie Obama to Fannie Mae and Franklin Raines, their former CEO, if it gets placed in any sort of real rotation over the next few days.
McCain Hits Obama on His Connections to Fannie Mae in New Ad: Advice
Wizbang —
The McCain Palin campaign has come out with an ad that mirrors his comment tying Obama to Fannie Mae: It's really important that McCain continue to hammer Obama on this because it's a lie that Obama all about change and reform, especially when it comes to this financial crisis. Obama had his hands out, eagerly accepting campaign funds totaling over $126,000 in just three years ...

The McCain has released a new ad entitled 'Advice.' It says:
Obama has no background in economics.

Shocking.
Under Raines, Fannie Mae committed 'extensive financial fraud.'
Raines made millions.
Fannie Mae collapsed.
Taxpayers? Stuck with the bill.
Barack Obama.
Bad advice. Bad instincts. Not ready to lead.

McCain Plays the Race Card
Swampland —
When politicians interject race into a campaign, they seldom do it directly. Consider McCain's new ad, which the campaign says it will be airing nationally:
This is hardly subtle: Sinister images of two black men, followed by one of a vulnerable-looking elderly white woman.
Let me stipulate: Obama's Fannie Mae connections are completely fair game. But this ad doesn't even mention a far more significant tie--that of Jim Johnson, the former Fannie Mae chairman who had to resign as head of Obama's vice presidential search team after it was revealed he got a sweetheart deal on a ...

Watch this ad: Now this particular post isn’t about whether you agree or disagree with the ad. It’s about Karen Tumulty of TIME and her absurd analysis of the ad. Say Tumulty: When politicians interject race into a campaign, they seldom do it directly. Consider McCain’s new ad, which the campaign says it will be airing nationally. This is hardly subtle: Sinister images of two black men, followed by one of a vulnerable-looking elderly white woman.Of course Obama is a black man, as is ...
USS Neverdock — USS Neverdock "America is often portrayed as an ignorant, unsophisticated sort of place, full of bible bashers and ruled to a dangerous extent by trashy television, superstition and religious bigotry, a place lacking in respect for evidence based knowledge. No More Mister Nice Blog — ONE RACIST WORD? Greg Sargent and Eric Kleefeld of Talking Points Memo suggest that the ad below is racist because it links Obama to former Fannie Mae head Franklin Raines, who's black: "> Maybe, maybe not. On one hand, as Sargent and Kleefeld point out, the ad focuses on Raines and ignores Jim Johnson, a white former Fannie-ite with stronger ties to Obama, and the average-American victim shown at the end of the ad is white. On the other hand, Raines is the typical ad attack-ad villain, a prominent guy who screwed up, and Obama can ...
The 'Elderly White Woman' Time Says McCain Using in 'Race Card' Ad
NewsBusters.org - Exposing Liberal Media Bias —
It's come to this . . .
Barack Obama became a candidate for president on the wings of his 2004 Dem convention keynote speech in which he famously said "there is not a Black America and a White America a Latino America and Asian America -- there’s the United States of America." But as Rush Limbaugh has described in the Wall Street Journal today, Obama is now relying on deceptive ads for the express purpose of stoking racial antagonism. Obama's appeal to our worst instincts finds its echo in the MSM. Time's Swampland blog has an item up today by Karen Tumulty entitled "McCain Plays the ...
Playing The "Playing The Race Card" Card
The Atlantic Politics Channel —
Time's Karen Tumulty all but calls the McCain campaign's new Frank Raines ad racist: "Sinister images of two black men, followed by one of a vulnerable-looking elderly white woman." Here's the "ad" -- not sure if it's airing anywhere to allow the scare quotes to drop. I asked an Obama campaign aide last night what he thought. Wouldn't want to go down that road without evidence, he said. Is the ad racist? Fair game? For one thing, the connection between Raines and the Obama campaign is extremely tenuous. As Tumulty mentions, the ad doesn't refer to an actual ...
So is Franklin Raines an Obama economic advisor or not?
Althouse —
The Obama campaign does not like this ad: And it's denying that Raines is an advisor. But then the Washington Post would have to be wrong. You can't bash McCain for basing the ad on the info in the Post and specifically identifying the Post as the source. Here's what the Post has today: The McCain campaign cited a July Washington Post profile of Raines as the source for his connection to Obama. In that profile, it was reported that he had "taken calls from Barack Obama's presidential campaign seeking his advice on mortgage and ...
Are All Anti-Obama Ads Racist?
Outside The Beltway | OTB —
Are All Anti-Obama Ads Racist? A concern that I’ve expressed since the days of the primary campaign is that, because Barack Obama looks black, virtually any criticism lodged against him can be seen in racial terms. (The same was true of gender in any attacks against Hillary Clinton.) The latest example is the bold proclamation from TIME’s Karen Tumulty “ McCain Plays the Race Card .” His offense? This ad: Says Tumulty, This is hardly subtle: Sinister images of two black men, followed by one of a vulnerable-looking elderly white woman. It's the Economy—and Energy
Little Miss Attila —
It's the Economy and Energy Over at Hot Air, the new McCain ads for Michigan and Ohio focus in on the dual-headed monster of the energy crisis and underemployment: Michigan specifically mentions drilling (along with "clean vehicles," and a glimpse of a hybrid-car symbol): Ohio's ad is similar, but more of a frontal assault on job-creation through small businesses and renewable energy: It's a good move to mention securing our retirement in these spots, as well. The McCain people seem to be cranking out one or political ads a day, and they know when to take an optimistic tone--as with the economics-minded, forward thinking spots ...

More Racist "Advice" From The McCain Campaign
BAGnewsNotes —
Many of you have written about my take on "Advice," the latest McCain attack video. Of course, I agree it's racist.
But what I also find interesting is the McCain camp's political perseveration. In other words, consider the very close parallel between the smarmy way Obama was portrayed in Schmidt/McCain's Kindergarten/Sex Ed piece ten days ago and the portrayal of Frank Raines in this latest job. In their desperation (Raines having virtually no connection to Obama or his campaign), Team McCain once again works the combination of the found photograph and ...
Selling them short
Pundit Review —
Selling them short In the wake of the S.E.C.’s temporary ban on short selling of financial stocks I think it is important to remember that they play a critical role on Wall Street. Most of us want stocks to go up. They bet that they will go down. They play an important role as contrarians, questioners of conventional wisdom. Two of America’s most spectacular bankruptcies were identified by shorts long before the rest of Wall Street had figured it out. Remember Enron ? The all-time most famous incident of gruff-talking CEOs is of course Jeffrey Skilling berating hedge fund manager Richard Grubman back ...

My trip to see the George Washington Inaugural Bible I read in the paper that this piece of history would be on display about 20 minutes from home and I couldn’t resist. This bible was printed in 1767 and used at George Washinton’s inauguration on April 30, 1789. It has also been used in some of the most regrettable events in our history, like Lincoln’s funeral and Jimmy Catrer’s inauguration. Here is how the Free Masons of St. John’s Lodge No. 1 , tell the story of the George Washington Inaugural Bible, “On April 30, 1789, an event took place of the greatest importance to the whole world. Dukakis Compares McCain Ad With Infamous 'Willie Horton' Ad
News —
Dukakis Compares McCain Ad With Infamous 'Willie Horton' Ad Former Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis said a recent McCain campaign ad featuring former Fannie Mae CEO Franklin Raines is tantamount to the infamous 1988 "Willie Horton" ad used against him. The McCain ad, entitled "Advice," juxtaposes images of Raines and Obama, who are both African-American, with the image of an elderly white woman. The McCain ad alleges that Obama has "bad instincts" for relying on the judgement of Raines as an advisor. The Horton ad, released by the Bush campaign in 1988, displayed a picture of the African-American Horton, a ...
