The convention, so far
pandagon.net - these things don't just blame themselves — by Amanda Marcotte Going into the last day, I’m inclined to say that the convention has amazing momentum, and I hope that it’s not going to get fucked up.  The speakers have all been on message.  A clear pro-woman case is being made, which makes me really happy.  But what’s really jumping out at me is that the Democrats are showing an uncharacteristic but hopefully soon to be characteristic amount of determination to win this thing.  The media manufactured this PUMA story in hopes of making it true, and the party is pushing back with a strong show of unity and purpose.  I’m impressed.  ...

The Affirmative Case: David for Obama
Politics Daily — Filed under: Endorsements, Democrats, Barack Obama, Featured Stories The idea behind the Affirmative Case was pretty simple. Rather than dwell on the negative aspects of the candidate that each of our writers wouldn't be supporting in this year's presidential election, Political Machine columnists were asked to hone in on the positive attributes of the person they endorse. This may seem like something of a counter-intuitive exercise for bloggers, who are predisposed, by nature, to follow their muckraking, partisan impulses. Indeed, if blogs serve a purpose in our society (a claim worthy of serious discussion) then it is to ...

Ranking Obama’s Best Speeches: Part 2 of 2
The Hill's Pundits Blog — Ranking Obama’s Best Speeches: Part 2 of 2 ( Terence Kane ) In case you missed the first part of this series, you can click here to catch up with the list. I started Part 1 of the blog by mentioning the hype surrounding Obama’s inaugural address. If I was to give Obama one piece of advice for that speech, I would suggest going back and watching all the available video of first presidential inaugural addresses and making sure yours doesn’t sound like theirs. Last week I went to the newly opened Newseum for the first time and watched their video exhibit on inauguration speeches, and they were all remarkably similar — and not in a good way. ...

Thank You All
N/A — I confess when this speech wasn’t even over in 2004, I thought I’d vote for this guy in 2008.  And I did.  I am thankful I get to vote.  I am thankful to be alive and glad to live in a country with ideals that yet may shine again.  I am thankful we are are human and may still find humane, living  solutions to grave and deadly problems.  I am thankful I may think the best  of people, but hold them to be better still, in spite of my illusions.  I am thankful for all who have helped me on my way, even as we have so much further to go.

The Moment When Our Planet Began to Heal
The Brussels Journal - The Voice of Conservatism in Europe — This moment in history, destined to be a where-were-you moment for the present crop of twentysomethings, was mostly missed by me. A morning en route from California to Texas via the miracle of aviation left me with a few minutes in the Phoenix airport, where I did not watch the televised Inauguration in progress, but rather those watching it. The scene is now familiar to anyone who has watched the watchers of Barack Obama over the past year: misty-eyed, rapt, mostly young, mostly female, disproportionately minority — and strangely possessed by a weird admixture of joy and anxiety that recalls nothing so much as the aftermath of a difficult birth. Perhaps this is no ...

FDL Book Salon Welcomes Earl Ofari Hutchinson: How Obama Won
Firedoglake — Like most Americans, Barack Obama first entered my consciousness with his keynote speech at the 2004 DNC Convention. Maybe it was the exultation of hearing for the first time the soaring rhetoric for which he has become so famous, made all that much more amazing in contrast to the painful chewing of words and malapropisms of George W. Bush. Maybe it was that Barack Obama appealed to the intelligence and altruism of his listeners rather than shutting it down in the monotone lecturings of then-candidate John Kerry. Maybe it was a little bit of both and more. Whatever the cause, the speech was electrifying and I’m sure that I was not the only person ...
