This video is completely untrue and has been debunked by the nonpartisan factcheck site factcheck.org:

    http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_alive_baloney.html

    http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/obama_and_infanticide.html

These videos are outright lies and is sad that these people would stoop so low. Besides, it is time for a different view on abortion:

Legislation is not the answer. I am against abortion, but for 35 years the Republicans have used this issue to get elected, not done anything major about it when they had plenty of opportunity (they have named 7 of the 9 Supreme Court Justices and only needed 5 to overturn Roe) then saddle us with enormous tax breaks for the rich - huge give-aways to their friends at oil companies, Pharm companies and others. Not to mention start unnecessary wars and create dangerous economic policies. Worldwide it is easy to see that legislation does not work:

    * Countries with the highest abortion rates like Angola, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Liberia, Egypt and Guatemala also have illegal abortion, meaning more babies die in countries where abortion is illegal.

    * The Netherlands has the lowest abortion rate in the world even though contraception and abortion there are legal and free.

    * Countries with the lowest abortion rates; Sweden, Iceland, Singapore, Finland, Japan, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands and Canada all have legal abortion.

The reason that legislation has not worked in other countries worldwide: it is near impossible to enforce.

The reason why abortions are lower in countries where it is legal: All those countries have free education, easy adoption programs, free health care, programs to help women, crisis centers, etc.

So the solution to this immoral act is not legislation - it is helping "the least of these" so that they never have to be in that position in the first place.

**DEVASTATING!!** Abortion Survivor Gianna Jessen Blasts Obama For Voting Against Protecting Newborn Survivors of Abortion In New Ad
Gateway Pundit — This is just devastating... Abortion Survivor Gianna Jessen joined Born Alive Truth in a new ad that attacks Obama for voting against rights for newborn survivors of abortion: Here's the powerful ad from BornAliveTruth.org: Can you imagine not giving babies their basic human rights, no matter how they entered our world? My name is Gianna Jessen, born 31 years ago after a failed abortion. I’m a survivor, as are many others... but if Barack Obama had his way, ...

Obama: Abortion-Survivor's Attack Ad Could Backfire
ScrappleFace — (2008-09-15) — A new TV ad in which the survivor of a botched abortion calls attention to Sen. Barack Obama’s repeated opposition to protecting such babies could backfire on the pro-life group that created the commercial, according to the Democrat presidential candidate. In the TV spot, Gianna Jessen, 31, calls on Sen. Obama to support born-alive infant protections because she claims that babies should have basic human rights “no matter how they entered our world.” ...

Abortion Survivor Gianna Jenson's Plea to Barack Obama: 'Please Support Born Alive Infant Protections' (Video)
Hyscience — Powerful: In this powerful ad sponsored by BornAliveTruth.org, abortion survivor Gianna Jesson questions Barack Obama for his active opposition as state senator to IL's Born Alive Infants Protection Act. Born Alive was introduced to stop IL hospitals from leaving babies who survived their abortions in soiled utility rooms to die. Gianna was aborted 31 years ago by a saline abortion procedure. Gianna testified for the federal Born Alive Infants Protection Act in 2001 and attended the presidential bill signing in 2002. Born ...

BornAliveTruth.org vs. Obama
Ben Smith's Blog — A new anti-abortion, anti-Obama ad revisits the Born Alive Infant Protection Act. The Illinois press, and Eric Zorn in particular, have the clearest summaries of this complicated topic, which make fairly clear that Obama's vote was cast against what was seen locally as a stealth attempt at a broader ban on abortion. (via Tapper)

Stirring anti-abortion voters
Jonathan Martin's Blog — A new 527 aimed at attacking Barack Obama for abortion-related votes he cast as a state senator is up today with an ad in Ohio and New Mexico featuring a self-proclaimed abortion-survivor.  As a state senator, Obama opposed legislation that proponents said would protect legal protection to babies outside the womb.  Ohio and New Mexico, in addition to being two of the most hotly-contested swing states, also feature thousands of anti-abortion Catholic voters.

Interview: True Lives
Articles on National Review Online — B arack Obama, meet your nightmare? I m a survivor, as are many others . . . but if Barack Obama had his way, I wouldn t be here, Jensen says in the ad. Four times, Barack Obama voted to oppose a law to protect babies left to die after a failed abortion. Senator Obama, please support born alive infant protections. Sound Politics — BornAliveTruth.org In my previous post, last night, I mentioned the fact that Obama voted to keep infanticide legal. This morning I see that Politico writes about a new 527 group called BornAliveTruth.org . Here's their first ad , playing in Ohio and New Mexico. Personally, I don't find the ad to be too powerful. I think most viewers will link it too closely to children who survived abortions but were not immediately born, and will disregard it because of that. I think it plays into the hands of Obama who wants to make this about abortion, instead of live births. And I find the claim that "if Barack Obama had his way, I ...

Abortion Survivor on Obama’s Vote
The Anchoress — The way I understand it, the Infants Born Alive Bill was introduced to the IL Senate and Obama voted against it because he wanted it to have the same language as the Federal Born Alive Bill. Ross Douthat — A few days ago, Jim Geraghty complained that my critique of McCain's sex-ed ad relied more on how the ad "feels" than on what the ad actually said. Today, Byron York marshals an extended defense of the ad's accuracy. And Rich Lowry writes that McCain's ads "are no worse than Obama's spots ...Obama just ran an ad saying McCain would cut education funding -- with no evidence. His response to McCain's supposed out-of-control negativity is a new negative ad misleadingly creating the impression that McCain aides are currently lobbying for special interests." Here's the thing, though: The reason that the sex-ed ad touched ...

It’s an indefensible position. And if you’d be willing to side with this bill just for the sake of protecting Roe v. Wade, it says a lot about what kind of person you are. Obama hits McCain on abortion in new spot
Jonathan Martin's Blog — Obama's camp goes up in Ohio with a response to the third-party spot tagging him on abortion.  Notably, Obama hits back not just with his usual counter of portraying McCain as uber-negative but he also frames the Republican as an abortion extremist.  "He's running on a platform to ban abortion, even in cases of rape and incest," says the announcer of McCain.  Technically, this is true.   The Republican platform does call for banning abortion with no exceptions for rape and incest.  McCain, however, supports keeping the two exceptions. More important, ...

Some children are born unwanted. Others aren't.
Classical Values — Some children are born unwanted. Others aren't. An anti-abortion group has sponsored this anti-Obama ad, in which Gianna Jesson (a woman who survived an abortion) points out that "If Barack Obama had his way, I wouldn't be here." It's hard hitting, and intended to highlight the fact that Barack Obama's position on abortion is to the left of Hillary Clinton and Barbara Boxer. While I think abortion is immoral, I oppose criminalizing early term abortion primarily for two reasons: 1. I am philosophically uncomfortable with the idea of imprisoning women who are so miserable with the idea of having a child that they decide to terminate their ...

Stanley Kurtz’s new article in WSJ on Obama-Ayers connection
Southern Appeal — This was published this morning . Here’s how it begins: Despite having authored two autobiographies, Barack Obama has never written about his most important executive experience. From 1995 to 1999, he led an education foundation called the Chicago Annenberg Challenge (CAC), and remained on the board until 2001. The group poured more than $100 million into the hands of community organizers and radical education activists. The CAC was the brainchild of Bill Ayers, a founder of the Weather Underground in the 1960s. Among other feats, Mr. Ayers and his cohorts bombed the Pentagon, and he has never expressed regret for his actions. Barack Obama’s ...

Voting Rights Section 5
Southern Appeal — Those who closely followed the Senate hearings of SA “patron Saint” Bill Pryor will remember that one of the bogus charges against Pryor was that he had taken the “wrong” position on the Voting Rights Act (i.e. that he was at least insensitive to racism), ignoring the fact that black Democratic Georgia AG Thurbert Baker had taken the same position as Pryor. In light of the history of American public education, it cannot seriously be suggested that the First Amendment “freedom of speech” encompasses a student’s right tos peak in public schools. Early public schools gave total control to teachers, who expected obedience and respect from students. And courts routinely deferred to schools’ authority to make rules and to discipline students for ...

Carol Platt Liebau: Obama Attacks Abortion Survivor
Townhall.com Blog's TownHall Blog — With this ad , Gianna Jessen launched a broadside against Barack Obama's repeated opposition to the Born Alive Infant Protection Act in Illinois (my column laying out the whole sordid history is here ). It's not surprising she'd object to his stance -- Jessen herself is the survivor of a botched abortion attempt. Barack's ad attacking Jessen (and inaccurately blaming John McCain for the ad) is here . He argues that his votes against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act are being "taken out of context." But her social justice (or lack of it) and her militarism indicates she has not yet appreciated the value of life. ( M.Z. Forrest ) [Palin] has a vagina. She used it 5 times to give birth. One time she did so for a child with Down Syndrome. Pointing fingers
Southern Appeal — I’ve never been one to go around pointing fingers for every financial downturn because, in my humble opinion, there will always be financial “bubbles” where Wall Street funnels money, bubbles that eventually burst and tank the stock markets. If it isn’t one thing, it will be another. However, since Obama has decided to blame McCain and the GOP for the subprime crisis, I think a little education is in order ...

The UNDECIDEDS…
Southern Appeal — Although typical, certainly, this is a frightening poll result. From Rasmussen : Forty-one percent (41%) say they are certain to vote for Obama and will not change their mind. Forty percent (40%) say the same about McCain. The remaining 19% are the candidates’ target audience for Friday night’s debate. Who makes up this 19% of people who still don’t know who they’re going to vote for? Are these the people paying the most attention to the race but are just torn between candidates, or are they hapless, superficial flakes who probably shouldn’t vote but will anyway?  Ah, the wonders of the democratic process!

And now for something completely different: A Protestant Post
Southern Appeal — I am a sorry excuse for a Protestant, but a Protestant nonetheless. I was raised among the frozen chosen Methodists, but I have always liked the idea of the Southern Baptist Convention even though I wear shoes and believe the Earth has been around a good deal longer than 6,000 years. How can you not love a dogged commitment to principles backed by the orotund strains of The Old Rugged Cross ? American Idealism
Southern Appeal — Barbara Ehrenreich has an interesting op-ed in the New York Times.  Now, I normally wouldn’t agree with anything either written by Ehrenreich or published in the Times, but she’s actually on to something here: GREED — and its crafty sibling, speculation — are the designated culprits for the financial crisis. But another, much admired, habit of mind should get its share of the blame: the delusional optimism of mainstream, all-American, positive thinking. Figures. When Your Candidate Has a Record of Supporting Infanticide You Do What You Can to Redefine "Values Voter"
Gateway Pundit — When your candidate has consistently voted for infanticide of live babies you do what you can to help him out... Four times Barack Obama voted against a bill that would protect babies born alive and left to die after a failed abortion: Born Alive Truth has more on Obama's disgusting record on infanticide. Barack Obama said this about saving babies who survived abortions: "Essentially adding an additional doctor who then has to be called in an emergency situation to come ...

Letterman rips McCain for cancelling appearance
Southern Appeal — I gotta say, this doesn’t paint McCain in a positive light: YouTube Preview Image Here’s a little free advice for the McCain Campaign: If you cancel an appearance on a major late-night talk show because you’re rushing back to D.C. to address an economic crisis, then you should probably do just that.

Why doesn’t Obama get more involved?
Southern Appeal — Look, no matter how you view the bailout, it’s clear that something needs to happen. The Senate Banking Committee has to act. And Obama is a member of that committee. Isn’t he? I mean , he said he was. Responding to an Israeli reporter’s question Wednesday on his commitment to protect the Jewish state, Barack Obama pointed to a bill “we passed” in the U.S. Senate Banking Committee that tightens sanctions and authorizes divestment from Iran. “My committee,” he called it.Except that he isn’t a member of the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs. “Just this past week, we passed out of the out of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee - which ...

Lest we forget what started a lot (but necessarily all) of this mess
Southern Appeal — From a 1999 New York Times article : Fannie Mae, the nation’s biggest underwriter of home mortgages, has been under increasing pressure from the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans among low and moderate income people and felt pressure from stock holders to maintain its phenomenal growth in profits.  … In moving, even tentatively, into this new area of lending, Fannie Mae is taking on significantly more risk, which may not pose any difficulties during flush economic times. But the government-subsidized corporation may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to that of the savings and loan ...

Barack Obama awarded in 2001 to a group headed by a one time campaign volunteer is now under investigation by the Illinois attorney general.” Apparently the garden was never built and $65,000 of the aforementioned amount ended up in the hands of the volunteer’s wife. Excellent news on the stem-cell front
Southern Appeal — This is huge : In November of last year, researchers in Wisconsin and Japan announced that they had successfully transformed regular adult cells into the equivalent of embryonic stem cells without the need for embryos. The advance (involving so-called induced pluripotent stem cells or iPS cells) pointed to a potential path around the moral and political debate over embryonic stem cell research, but some advocates argued that because the technique relied on retroviruses, which might be connected to some risks of cancer, they might not be safe for clinical use. She can bow out for personal reasons, perhaps because she wants to spend more time with her newborn. No one would criticize a mother who puts her family first. Do it for your country. Steven Waldman: Why the Anti-Obama 'Botched Abortion" Ad Is Inaccurate
Politics on HuffingtonPost.com — This anti-Obama ad featuring Gianna Jessen, the survivor of a botched abortion, is powerful and moving. It vividly shows the horrors of late term abortions, and reminds us of the powerfully important issues at stake in the abortion debate - including ideas that politicians like to sometimes gloss over. However, the one thing it does not prove is its central political claim: "My name is Gianna Jessen, born 31 years ago after a failed abortion. But if Barack Obama had his say, I wouldn't be here." Here's why. Pro-life advocates were recommending "Born Alive" legislation ...

Let Palin be Palin
Southern Appeal — While I am a staunch Republican, and a strong supporter of Governor Palin, I am more than willing to admit the obvious: Sarah Palin has not performed well in the major interviews she has done. Why is this? Is it because she’s stupid? I think not. By all accounts, Palin is a quick study and plenty smart.  So what gives? Why is Palin struggling so much in these interviews? Well, let’s start with the obvious: Governor Palin is simply not familiar with many of the national issues being debated in this presidential campaign.  She’s not a foreign-policy expert, and it is unfair to expect her to speak with any degree of expertise on Iraq, Afghanistan, or ...

OBAMA CAMPAIGN ADOPTS POLICE STATE TACTICS TO SUPPRESS DISSENT
Southern Appeal — The Obama Campaign has recently adopted a truly frightening tactic in Missouri. Obama’s campaign is assembling a group of sympathetic prosecutors and law enforcement agents to “target” anyone they think is lying or misleading the public about Obama and his positions. If this intimidation tactic didn’t smack of fascism by its very nature, the title of this group, The Barack Obama Truth Squad, should dispel any lingering doubts. You can watch a local news report about the group here. ...

Obama and the Uh’s, Ah’s, and Ummm’s
Southern Appeal — Much has been made by some conservative pundits about Obama being teleprompter dependent and how he racks up the speech pauses when he goes off the cuff. One might recall Rush Limbaugh compiling just the “uh’s” in an Obama appearance for comedic effect or Hugh Hewitt wondering how many of the awkward pauses he would accumulate during the first debate. I don’t think the issue is that Obama is ‘prompter dependent or that he is inarticulate off the cuff. I followed him closely during the Democratic primary season and found him smooth whether working from prepared remarks or not. The reason he has begun to seem halting is simple. Obama runs effortlessly ...

While we have been running around in circles over the upcoming election, the music stopped, and Conservatives are the ones without a chair. There has been a lot of finger pointing over the past couple of weeks about who is responsible for our current economic “adjustment.” Despite the fact that it has been two decades since we have had a true Conservative in the White House and the fact that the Free Market-Wall Street connection is a myth, the perception is that we ...

Southern Appeal — The risk-adverse side of me wants to see Congress pump $700,000,000,000.00 into the private sector. When bad things are happening, I think it is natural to want to see a proactive approach — to do something. What is tough for me is recognizing that my bailout desire is a product of fear, and not a reasoned decision based on what is best in the long term. Let’s face it, any Adam Smith worshipper should cringe at the thought of a “government bailout” of private markets. That said, there is an argument for doing nothing ...

Southern Appeal — We’ve got our Conor Friedersdorfs and Kathleen Parkers shooting at Sarah Palin and Erick Ericksons defending her. The defenders wonder what team the critics are on. The critics appeal to intellectual honesty. I appeal to the concept of edificiation. Do the words we write or say actually contribute anything to the election and to the civic discussion? Are they adequately considered after time to look at all the evidence? If I look at it in those terms, I have to side with the defenders. Brian McLaren and Barack Obama
Southern Appeal — I have read Brian McLaren’s work to the profit of my own thinking.  He has many good ideas and has stimulated the church in important ways. However, I think he has a major blind spot when it comes to politics.  McLaren recently came out in support of Barack Obama’s campaign for the presidency. ...

WHY OBAMA’S ASSOCIATION WITH WILLIAM AYERS IS IMPORTANT
Southern Appeal — Every time Obama’s association with William Ayers is brought up Obama supporters love to point out that Obama was only eight when Ayers was trying to kill servicemen & women and law enforcement personnel. Furthermore, they claim that he was unaware of the activities of Ayers and his fellow terrorists. I think this article ...

Academics supporting Bill Ayers
Southern Appeal — There’s now a website where academics can sign a statement in support of Bill Ayers, who has recently come under renewed scrutiny due to his associations with Senator Obama. Here are some of the more deranged excerpts: The current characterizations of Professor Ayers—“unrepentant terrorist,” “lunatic leftist”—are unrecognizable to those who know or work with him. It’s true that Professor Ayers participated passionately in the civil rights and antiwar movements of the 1960s, as did hundreds of thousands of Americans. *     *     * [T]he attacks on and the character assassination of Ayers threaten the university as a space of open inquiry and ...

The Woods Fund board - see it for yourself.
Southern Appeal — Thanks to what is called the Wayback Machine  (a website that was immensely helpful to me during my tenure appeal), I was able to obtain several deleted web pages of the Woods Fund that list the names of Senator Barack Obama and Professor William Ayers as members of its board. Although this association between these two men is not disputed, there’s no substitute for seeing it in print. You can find a pdf of the page with the 2001 board here and the 2003 board here . The Wayback Machine copy of the original pages may be found here  (October 2001) and the second here (March 2003). Notice that Senator Obama served ...

Fairweatherman friendship?:Testimony of a victim of Professor Ayers’ terrorism
Southern Appeal — This appeared today on JohnMcCain.com : Statement From John M.Murtagh On Barack Obama’s Relationship With William Ayers ARLINGTON, VA — Today, John M. Murtagh made the following statement on Barack Obama’s relationship with William Ayers:“When I was 9 years-old the Weather Underground, the terrorist group founded by Barack Obama’s friend William Ayers, firebombed my house. Barack Obama has dismissed concerns about his relationship with Ayers by noting that he was only a child when Ayers was planting bombs at the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol. In 1996 Barack Obama supported same-sex marriage, though Obama supporter, Kmiec, says his present views would likely establish it nationwide.
Southern Appeal — It can be found in the Wayback Machine here . There’s a regular web version here . Scroll down to 13th District. According to Obama supporter , Doug Kmiec, the senator’s present position –repealing the 1996 Federal Defense of Marriage Act while opposing both same-sex marriage as well as bans on same-sex marriage (don’t ask me to try to make those two positions coherent)–would lead to the proliferation of same-same marriage. Professor Kmiec made these comments in August 2007 . ( cross-posted )

Radio Silence
Southern Appeal — Hey sportsfans, sorry for the lack of posting the last three days. I’ve been in a jury trial all week (which is extremely rare for me), and it just ended late this afternoon. The good news is that my clients, who are wonderful folks, prevailed on a $5.5 million dollar claim filed against the estate, and we were able to secure a $175,000 judgment for our side. Needless to say, it was a good day. And I have to say, I actually felt like a “real lawyer” over the last three days. I’ve only slept 12 hours since Sunday, but it’s been fun. Regular blogging should resume tomorrow.

Newsom on Appellate Advocacy
Southern Appeal — Law Dragon has an excellent interview with future supreme-court justice, and FOF (’Friend of Feddie”), Kevin Newsom. Kevin offers sage advice in this interview to anyone who aspires to be an effective appellate lawyer. Here’s a taste: LD: Has your argument style evolved over the years? KN: I don’t really know if it’s evolved. The truth is whether I am talking to you or hanging out with friends or playing with my kids or standing at the podium in the Supreme Court, it’s all the same. I’m the same guy – it’s the only way I know how to be. My view has always been that the best oral advocates are conversationalists. You have to get over the ...

Craig Hazen’s review of Bill Maher’s film, Religulous
Southern Appeal — My good friend, Craig J. Hazen (Professor of Comparative Religion and Apologetics, Biola University), just published a nice review of Bill Maher’s mocumentary, Religulous. Here’s an excerpt : It was pretty clear that the few folks attracted to the movie were already fans of Bill Maher and his open hostility to all things religious. Why, then, so little laughter from them? I think it’s obvious. Anyone who fits that strange “I’m smarter than Blaise Pascal, John Milton, C.S. Lewis, Maimonidies, and Averroes put together” mold has already had his laughs. After all, anyone who is able to work a TV remote control has immediate and ...

Associating Obama with a white man = xenophobia and racism?
Southern Appeal — I’m a little perplexed by this NYT editorial. And not in the usual “What kind of lobotomized Paris Hiltons are running this pathetic excuse for a Che Guevara-worshipping freakshow?” way. Take a clicklook . It is a sorry fact of American political life that campaigns get ugly, often in their final weeks. But Senator John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin have been running one of the most appalling campaigns we can remember. They have gone far beyond the usual fare of quotes taken out of context and distortions of an opponent’s record — into the dark territory of race-baiting and xenophobia. Senator Barack Obama has taken some cheap shots at Mr. ...

The Economic Crisis Explained
Southern Appeal — The mortgage based security crisis has confounded me because I keep thinking, “So what if the mortgages fail, that’s what the underlying asset is for. The Final Cut
Southern Appeal — During the summer, I watched a film starring Robin Williams in a dramatic role.  Contrary to his comedian image, I’ve always thought he was better as a serious actor.  This particular film, The Final Cut , was about a future in which it is possible to have a bio-implant that essentially records every event of one’s life.  At death, it is removed and a “cutter” reviews the material (organized by the software into amazing categories) for compilation into a remembrance. As you might imagine, the raw footage is all too honest.  The only people who ever see it are the cutters.  They know the real truth, but rarely show it.  The surviving friends and ...

Christian Higher Education
Southern Appeal — I have spent the last five years of my life with two goals. One has been to write a book about secularism which would demonstrate what I believe to be the uselessness of the concept.  That goal has been achieved.  The End of Secularism comes out in August 2009 with Crossway Books. The other has been to do anything I can to take Christian higher education to the next level.  I worked to that end while trying to save the presidency of Robert Sloan at Baylor University.  What I saw there was a growing community of serious Christian scholars taking shape.  Those on the outside can laugh if they want, but what I saw happening there in Waco was the first ...

Disengaged
Southern Appeal — As y’all know, this past week I was lead counsel in the biggest jury trial of my career. It lasted three days, and during that time I missed the second presidential debate and didn’t watch the news at all. It was a truly wonderful experience. I know this is an important election, and I certainly recognize what’s at stake. But right now, I could honestly care less. I don’t know that I’ve ever been this disengaged this close to a presidential election. Honestly, I just want it to be over.

Southern Appeal — Obama and the Super Majority Senate. When I read it, it sounds like I’m rolling the name of some alternative band across my tongue, but I have to admit that the idea actually scares me. Any reader of this blog is well aware of the future threat to the Supreme Court, abortion, mandatory healthcare, tax increases, etc., but there is one piece of the agenda that hasn’t got much airplay that could affect Conservatives the most because it could change the rules of the game. It’s no secret that there are no bigger lackeys on the left than the union bosses. For the better part of the century, the Dems have handed over the money and freedom of working men and ...

And the question remains: Just who is Barack Obama?
Southern Appeal — Stanley Kurtz gives us some insight into Obama’s character with this excellent piece . Here’s the money quote: However he may seek to deny it, all evidence points to the fact that, from his position as board chair of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, Barack Obama knowingly and persistently funded an educational project that shared the extremist and anti-American philosophy of Jeremiah Wright . The Wright affair was no fluke. It’s time for McCain to say so.

The Wilderness calls
Southern Appeal — Well, tonight is the final presidential debate . And unless Senator Obama has a meltdown of historical proportions (e.g., “Damn right, I support infanticide! I hate babies!”), I don’t see the polls tightening up to any great degree. Things look grim, folks. Very grim. There is always a chance that McCain could pull this thing off, but that seems less likely by the day. I, for one, am just about ready to purchase a ticket to the Wilderness, where the Blanton’s runs free and there is nothing to watch but ESPN.  Otherwise, I have no doubt that my new penumbra-loving overlords fully intend to send my sorry hindquarters to a reeducation camp for ...

Welcome to the party, pal
Southern Appeal — The utter hypocrisy of Obama-supporting “conservatives,” especially Chris Buckley, has been captured by Jay Anderson in an update to a post that I linked to previously .  Remember how Buckley whined about all us mean conservatives taking objection to his insufficiently supported decision to vote for Barack Obama?  If you recall, Buckley wrote this: So, I have been effectively fatwahed (is that how you spell it?) by the conservative movement, and the magazine that my father founded must now distance itself from me. But then, conservatives have always had a bit of trouble with the concept of diversity. The GOP likes to say it’s a ...

Reagan’s Response to the Call of the Wilderness
Southern Appeal — Feddie: I certainly understand your concerns (and dare I say it depression) regarding the results of the upcoming election.  But consider one of my favorite quotes from President Reagan:“We’re blessed with the opportunity to stand for something - for liberty and freedom and fairness - and these are things worth fighting for, worth devoting our lives to.  And we have good reason to be hopeful and optimistic.  We have made much progress already.  So let us go forth with good cheer and stout hearts, happy warriors out to seize back a country and a world to freedom.”   America is amazingly resilient country.  Just consider what we have done in the past.  ...

My 30-Year High School Reunion

It was great to catch up with so many friends, two of whom, Jaime Holcomb and Ricardo Hawkins , were my teammates on Gorman’s first big school (AAA) state championship basketball team (1978).  Also present was Bob Glennen , with whom I was on both the track and cross-country teams. Laura Ingraham v. Heather McDonald on Sarah Palin
Southern Appeal — You can listen here . My take: McDonald–with “a self-ordained professor’s tongue too serious to fool” ( to borrow from B. Dylan )–reveals a deep loathing for those who do not share her cultural proclivity for academic pedigree, pontifical articulation, and self-congratulatory verbosity. She is, sadly, not alone among the hob nob right snobs. She is joined by the linguistically adept David Brooks, David Frum, Chris Buckley, and Kathleen Parker. They, of course, like George Barnard Shaw, Aldous Huxley, and Margaret Sanger, write well, think big thoughts, and attend all the right parties. To clip and paste from a famous line offered by ...

Some adivce for Senator Obama
Southern Appeal — Dear Senator Obama: I thought you could use some advice from another member of Congress who came from the State of Illinois - Abraham Lincoln: You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.  You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.  You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.  You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.   You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.  You cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence.  You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

Robert George (and Yuval Levin) respond to Obama’s born-alive claim in the debate
Southern Appeal — Earlier this week , I linked to an essay by Princeton professor  Robert P. George (” Obama’s Abortion Extremism “) clearly showing that Senator Obama’s views on abortion are the most extreme of any presidential candidate in U. S. History. Now, with Yuval Levin, Professor George replies to Obama’s misleading defense of his abortion record in Wednesday’s debate. Here are some excerpts from the essay: Obama’s latest excuse for opposing the Illinois Born-Alive Infants Protection Act is that the law was ”unnecessary” because babies surviving abortions were already protected. It won’t fly. In last night’s presidential debate, ...

Gateway Pundit — Pro-Life groups have been very hard on Obama this year for his 4 votes in support of infanticide: As an Illinois State Senator, Barack Obama opposed the Illinois Born Alive Infants Protection Act. Hyscience — Denver archbishop Charles Chaput labeled infanticide supporter Barack Obama as the "most committed" abortion-rights candidate in 35 years! (HT - Gateway Pundit): My Way News reported: Denver Roman Catholic Archbishop Charles Chaput labeled Barack Obama the "most committed" abortion-rights candidate from a major party in 35 years while accusing a Catholic Obama ally and other Democratic-friendly Catholic groups of doing a "disservice to the church." Chaput, one of the nation's most politically outspoken Catholic ...

Justice Thomas: How to Interpret the Constitution
Southern Appeal — The Wall Street Journal published excerpts from a talk Justice Thomas delivered at the Manhattan Institute last week.  As usual, Thomas cuts right to the heart of the question, namely: how should we interpret the Constitution?  The whole thing is worth a read, but here is the key part: To assure the independence of federal judges, the framers provided us with life tenure and an irreducible salary — though inflation has found a way around the latter. This independence, in turn, was to assure our neutrality and impartiality, which are at the very core of judging — and being a judge. Yet, this independence can also insulate a judge from ...

Obama national lead shrinks to +4.8% (RCP), but things still look bleak
Southern Appeal — Very interesting . The key, of course, is the battleground-state polling . Here’s the breakdown right now: Florida (+3.2% Obama) Ohio (+2.8% Obama) Nevada (+4.2% Obama) North Carolina (+1.3% Obama) Missouri (+2.5% Obama) West Virginia (+2.4% McCain) Indiana (+3.8% McCain) Colorado (+6.0% Obama)  Georgia (+6.8% McCain) Virginia (+8.1% Obama) New Mexico (+8.4% Obama) Montanta (+5.6% McCain) Notice a pattern, folks? These are all states that Bush won in 2004. And that’s a lot of ground for McCain to make up in just 15 days. Is it possible for him to do it? Sure. Is it likely? I doubt it. Fwiw, my guess is that McCain will end up winning ...

Was the Louisiana Purchase constitutional?
Southern Appeal — I interrupt SA’s normal campaign-related blogging to ask what will seem like a completely arcane historical question: was the Louisiana Purchase constitutional?  After having read a quite a lot about the deal, I still remain somewhat unsure about the answer to that question.  Jefferson seemed to think it was unconstitutional, but went ahead with it when he thought the deal would fall through if he delayed too long in trying to push for a constitutional amendement. So, I put the question to you, the Southern Appeal readership.

Justice Takes a Barack Seat
Southern Appeal — Two days ago I had published this column about why DoJ is not enforcing the HAVA voting control act in Ohio. It turns out that I UNDERestimated the DoJ bias in favor of Obama. See this new report from OpenSecrets. Wow. So much for the establishment media image of “career employees” as being somehow neutral, disinterested defenders of the public good.

DEMOCRAT OFFICIAL IN VIRGINIA THROWING OUT MILITARY BALLOTS
Southern Appeal — This story is why I hate having to use an absentee ballot when I am deployed. Fairfax general registrar Rokey Suleman said Thursday that he has had to reject some of the ballots because of a Virginia law passed in 2002. That law — then called Senate Bill 113, sponsored by then state Sen. Bill Bolling — requires that when an overseas citizen wants to request an absentee ballot and cast a vote with the same paperwork, it requires not only a witness signature but also the current address of the witness. The McCain campaign said there’s not even a space for the witness to list an address. Suleman agreed; he said the federal document was changed in ...

Polls Narrowing
Southern Appeal — There are some good signs this morning on the polling front. The gap between Obama and McCain in the Gallup tracking poll (traditional*) has narrowed to two points. Reportedly, this was mirrored in the Rasmussen tracking poll, which now shows only a three point gap. Make no mistake; McCain is still behind. However, these results indicate that he’s well within striking distance even this late in the game. * I disregard the “expanded” Gallup tracking poll, which gives an edge to Obama, because it fails to consider past voting behavior. It almost seems designed to inflate Obama’s numbers.

OBAMA SPEECH WRITER LEAVES CAMPAIGN AND WILL VOTE FOR MCCAIN
Southern Appeal — This woman is exceptionally brave. When one considers how the Obama Campaign, as well as the mainstream media, has treated apostates from the church of the Obamessiah one has to appreciate the courage this act of honesty represents. I think she hits the nail on the head with this: I can no longer justify what this party has done and can’t dismiss the treatment of women and working people as just part of the new kind of politics. It’s wrong and someone has to say that. And also say that the Democratic Party’s talking points—that Senator John McCain is just four more years of the same and that he’s President Bush—are now just hooker lines that ...
