Bounds Tries To Dodge Question On How McCain Will Pay For Bailouts And The Iraq War
Wonk Room — On Saturday, in response to the ongoing financial crisis, the Bush administration proposed a $700 billion bailout for troubled financial institutions. This comes after the federal government has already spent $900 billion on the rescues of Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and AIG. Today, CNN’s Contessa Brewer asked Tucker Bounds, a spokesman for Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), how McCain plans to pay for the bailouts - and continue the war in Iraq - without raising taxes. Having no answer, Bounds tried to change the subject by asking himself “a better question.” Watch it: ...

The McCain Budget
Matthew Yglesias — Contessa Brewer asks Tucker Bounds how, exactly, John McCain plans to balance the budget consistent with his tax promises (huge cuts) and commitment to endless war in Iraq. Bounds has no idea: As Pat Garofalo observes you’ve got to feel bad for Bounds in this situation because he’s been given an impossible assignment: “before accounting for the bailouts - they result in a budget deficit of $505 billion, which would be the largest deficit in 25 years.” You should probably treat the bailout money as additions to the ...

Lies, damned lies, and McCain's budget
Political Animal — LIES, DAMNED LIES, AND MCCAIN'S BUDGET.... If elected, John McCain would inherit a budget deficit of about a half-trillion dollars. He would also take office in the midst of a Wall Street bailout that would cost in upwards of another trillion dollars. McCain then wants to cut hundreds of billions of dollars in taxes, and keep up the war in Iraq indefinitely. John Harwood asked McCain on CNBC the other day, "Would you concede, then, that you could not achieve your goal of balancing the budget in your first term with this huge bailout added?" McCain responded ...

Contessa Brewer Wins Latest Round Of "Stump Tucker Bounds"
Politics on HuffingtonPost.com — Another day, another opportunity for a teevee news anchor to play, and subsequently win, a round of Stump Tucker Bounds! Today it's MSNBC's Contessa Brewer's turn. She asks Bounds how McCain will pay for the Paulson bailout and the Iraq War without raising taxes. Bounds deflects the question by saying that a better question is to ask Barack Obama how he will pay for government spending to turn all Americans into elitists, but Brewer isn't having any of it, telling Bounds, "I actually thought my question was pretty good!" That leads Bounds to recite a bunch of platitudes that just don't sound as nice without Sarah Palin's Alaska dialect. ...

Maybe A Total Press Blackout Is In Order
The Great Plains Observer — Maybe John McCain should rethink his unspoken policy of only having surrogates doing interviews. Among countless gaffes, you have Carly Fiorina saying he isn’t qualified to run a company and then there is Tucker Bounds whom hasn’t seen a question yet that he can answer… Random Posts
