McCain: 'Convention Night'
Ben Smith's Blog — In an ad that is possibly a smidgen less historic, thrilling, and unusual than advertised, and which will air during the convention, McCain congratulates Obama on a "job well done" and generally associates himself with the day's good will. Both candidates used to have reputations for high-minded aversion to slash-and-burn politics. A summer of partisan sparring has left Obama's damaged and McCain's pretty much gone, but that's a high-ground that matters to some of the independent voters they're trying to court, and one both candidates are striving to reclaim.

Tonight's McCain Ad Will Congratulate Obama
Ace of Spades HQ — Tonight's McCain Ad Will Congratulate Obama Racist condescension, of course. Script: "Job Well Done" "Senator Obama, this is truly a good day for America. Too often the achievements of our opponents go unnoticed, so I wanted to stop and say congratulations. "How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. New McCain Ad Congratulates Obama
TPM Election Central — So here's the ad the McCain campaign has been hyping all day -- it's a spot that will run during tonight's speech in which McCain, directly addressing the camera, congratulates Obama for his achievement: "Senator Obama, this is truly a good day for America," McCain says, adding: "How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. Tomorrow, we'll be back at it. But tonight, Senator, job well done." Matt Lewis: New McCain Ad: 'Convention Night'
Townhall.com Blog's TownHall Blog — As promised ... McCain isn't doing the flashy tech stuff like Obama -- but he is always aggressively on top of doing interesting little things just like this. And I think when you add these little things up, it makes a big difference. If nothing else, this is clearly not going to be a Bob Doleish campaign. It's hard to remember, but there was a time when we were fearful that this campaign could not keep up. Those thoughts are erased ...

Slick.
Little Miss Attila — Slick. Via AllahP, who points out that if Obama attacks McCain tonight, he may well look "ungracious." If he's smart, he'd editing his speech a bit, as we speak. There is a sort of warmth to McCain that one cannot deny, despite his temper, and his inability at times to suffer fools. I don't see a note on this memo, however, that John McCain approved it. I'm sure he never saw it. Anyway, it's a clever move.

Class Amidst the Storm
The Moderate Voice — This is turning into a down and dirty fight to the finish for the White House, but each side may still show their moments of grace. Perhaps John McCain read Tony Campell’s post earlier. Perhaps he just outflanked the worries of our Editor, Joe Gandelman. Right Wing Nation — To be aired after Obama’s speech. Very well played, Senator. And speaking of, isn’t it a bit odd, after all the “texting” and “web 2.0-ing” Obama supposedly does and how the nutroots jeered at McCain for being computer illiterate that the McCain campaign has turned into the King of Youtube over the last couple of weeks? What, at least an ad a day, and some days, two or three. Ah, wait. The Blogfather has also noticed.

McCain offers tip of cap to Obama

Every four years, of course, there's a night like this on which the Democratic nominee monopolizes the news, just as there's a night when the Republican nominee does -- but John McCain and his people just can't stand it, and they keep desperately trying to get attention, like a first-grader who can't sit in his seat and focus. John McCain’s Dick Move
The Talent Show — I don’t know if the John McCain we’ve been seeing lately is the real McCain or “Candidate McCain“, but either way, John McCain is turning out to be a real jerk. For the candidate whose earlier promise to run a “respectful campaign” has already become a running joke, John McCain has spent the last few weeks being inexcusably disrespectful towards his opponent. There was a time when candidates wouldn’t run negative ads during the Olympics out of respect for the Olympic spirit of unity. John McCain eschewed that trend and spent $5 million in ad time during the games to bash ...

But at the end of the day, we have to decide whether we are going to buy into a political ideology merely because it is dressed up in eloquent words. Can we? Harsh shot after harsh shot was leveled at John McCain and the Republican Party. That's fine; politics ain't beanbag. Thoughts on the First Nomination Won Online
The Next Right — I don't much like Barack Obama, a perception that was reinforced by the speech tonight. But I like the way he won. As a student of politics, I consider it something of a duty to understand the way politicians win, even I'd never support them. In the spirit of John McCain's "Well done," I'd like to single out the Obama campaign for some praise tonight, and then return to our regularly scheduled programming.  Most of the commentary on the historicity of the Obama nomination has focused on the first African American to win a major party nomination, but Obama's win also signals a shift in the way that campaigns ...

Screw the foreplay, here is Pat Buchanan being positively effervescent about the speech: Heheh, Pat Buchanan joins the Obamaniacs and they celebrate it. The only thing that could make this better is if Jerome Corsi decides to endorse Obama tomorrow. Meanwhile, back in the real world, Obama's lost a point at InTrade. Daily Digest: Split-Screening Obama Speech and Palin VP Pick
techPresident — The Web on the Candidates * There was a ton of live blogging, twittering and videoblogging last night, and we're not going to attempt to summarize it all here. Personally, I found glancing at Twitscoop, which shows the hottest terms on Twitter at any given moment, to be a wonderful way to take the pulse of the watch-erati as we all waited for Obama's acceptance speech. There were lots of obvious winners, like Crow (for Sheryl Crow) and Legend (for John Legend), but who knew that displaced manufacturing worker, average guy speaker and lifelong Republican Barney Smith would be such a hit? Obviously his line ...

THRILLED !
Dr. Sanity — Look for the overtly sexist (and latently racist) left to dismiss and sneer McCain's choice; and in general be extremely ungracious about the whole thing. I would bet that inside they are furious and outraged that McCain could be such a....maverick. Compare and contrast.

Classy gesture or Cynical Ploy?
Rantings of a Sandmonkey — McCain released the following ad the day of Obama's candidacy at the democratic convention, congratulating him on his achievment for being a black candidate. At first I thought it was nice, and thought that be weird, and then I noticed its subversive nature. "How perfect that your nomination would come at this historic day."  And by historic day, he means the 45 year anniversary of MLK's speech, thus highlighting the cynical interesting nature of positioning the nomination on that day.  But I could be wrong. What do you think?

How Perfect For You
small dead animals — How Perfect For You Political ad season is in full swing. Most ads are just variations on the same basic themes; there's the openly low-blow approach, as in this Barrack Obama ad which takes one trivial verbal stumble by John McCain and uses editing tricks to make him appear not just infirm , but dangerously, ominously infirm, and then there's the ol' boilerplate ads in which a soothing voice reassures you, in a tone that's a cross between a tampon ad and someone talking you off a high ledge, that you're going to have a good life if you just choose the right political product. Some ads take newer and more creative ...

Senator Obama’s Negative Campaign While Wearing a Halo
Flopping Aces — New York Times: The McCain campaign’s recent angry tone and sharply personal attacks on Senator Barack Obama appear to have backfired and tarnished Senator John McCain more than their intended target, the latest New York Times/CBS News poll has found. After several weeks in which the McCain campaign unleashed a series of strong political attacks on Mr. Obama, trying to tie him to a former 1960s radical, among other things, the poll found that more voters see Mr. McCain as waging a negative campaign than Mr. Obama. Six in 10 voters surveyed said that Mr. McCain had spent more time attacking Mr. Obama ...
