New McCain ad: Democrats love a Maverick! posted at 10:00 am on August 7, 2008 by Allahpundit Send to a Friend | printer-friendly The second ad in as many days to display the “Maverick” brand, part of his strategy to claim America’s new center-left median voter while nudging Obama towards the fringe. He’s taken heat for having a schizophrenic message but watching this reminds you why it’s necessarily so: It’ll take a wide, wide straddle between the GOP base and that median to win, so wide that he’s forced to tout endorsements aimed at one group that would actually infuriate the other. Which, incidentally, ...

One-minute long political web ads have one primary audience, aside from political junkies: the press.
Like another recent spot from John McCain's campaign -- "Broken" -- their latest seems intended to burnish the Arizona Republican's "Maverick" credentials among journalists who could be starting to wonder whether he's become just another regular hack politician in light of recent harsh attacks on Barack Obama.
So the campaign brings us a piece called "Praising John McCain," which features a string of top Democratic heavyweights bestowing praise on the presumptive Republican nominee. ...

Opening the Day: Newt Wants To Shut the Government Down Again Over Drilling
Open Left - Front Page —
Dog days of summer.
Newt Gingrich wants Republicans to shut the government down over drilling. Here's Tom Daschle.
"The Republicans haven't had much luck with shutdowns in recent years, and I can't imagine that this would be any different," he said. "The American people want to see progress, they want to see comity, they want to see bipartisanship. They want to see some action, not shutdowns. I can't imagine they would fare any better this time."
Bleh.

You Know Who Loves McCain? All Those Democratic Senators Republicans Can't Stand
Ace of Spades HQ —
You Know Who Loves McCain? All Those Democratic Senators Republicans Can't Stand After a week or two of drawing sharp distinctions between themselves and Obama (and seeing a corresponding cut in The One's lead) the McCain camp apparently felt they were in danger of attracting too many Republican and conservative voters. The ad doesn't carry the McCain-Feingold mandated, "I'm John McCain and I approve this message" tag, so at this point it's web only. Given that type of distribution, will it really attract more attention from independents and disaffected Democrats than it pisses off conservatives and Republicans who are more likely to see it?

McCain webad: Praise for McCain
Ben Smith's Blog —
It's a perennial, and it showcases one of Hillary's few really biting, damaging lines:
I know Senator McCain has a lifetime of experience that he will bring to the White House, and Senator Obama has a speech that he gave in 2002.
At slightly lower velocity:
Russ Feingold: "He's a great guy."
Needless to say, many of the speakers look a bit younger in the webad than they are now.

Decision ‘08, a competition launched earlier this year by MySpace, NBC News, and msnbc.com to find two citizen journalists to cover the national conventions has selected its winners. Mavericky Goodness
Weekly Standard Blog —
Above is the McCain campaign’s new ad. Not that anyone asked my opinion, but I like it. Facing an unpleasant reality, there’s no way a normal Republican would have had a chance in the 2008 general election. The Republican brand at this moment is badly damaged and in disrepute. It’s something of a miracle that John McCain became the party’s nominee. It’s a happy miracle, since he’s the only nominee who would have had a chance.
The Mavericky heresies that McCain has indulged in over the past seven years are precisely what make him electable. And though the Maverick ...

Why "Maverick" McCain's "Dems like me" ad is pointless

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS by Amy Weiss The latest McCain ad, " Praising McCain " features clips of prominent Democrats saying nice things about him. Many of these clips are years old, some are not given in full context, but it proves a point that yes, some Democrats have said nice things about John McCain. What's silly about this ad is its assertion that a few kind words mean McCain is the most bipartisan politician ever. The ad uses the word "maverick" twice in the 60-second spot as if saying it enough makes it true. DNC Chairman Howard Dean, who was one of the Democrats featured in "Praising McCain," was quick to point out this statement ...

The Democrats who appear in an ad praising Senator McCain are now blasting him for using their own words against them. Most noteworthy, of course, is the denunciation of Francophile Jacques Kerry (a man who does, indeed, know a little something about flip-flopping ). He's clearly the most dishonorable of the lot, having not only sought to put John McCain on his presidential ticket four years ago, but also having benefited from McCain's defense of his military service back in 2004. The larger point about the ad, of course, is that it helps McCain with independents -- and, as a big bonus -- makes ...

Early this morning, McCain's lobbyists released a new ad with clips of Democrats-- Biden, Daschle, Hillary, Kerry, Howard Dean-- all saying something positive about him. The DNC responded with more up to date reactions about what these same Democrats think of his current campaign. As Howard Dean sums it up, "The John McCain of 2000 wouldn't vote for this John McCain. We don't need another four years of George Bush." Take a look:

ONE REASON THE RACE IS CLOSER THAN THE DEMOCRATS EXPECTED: THEY NEVER EXPECTED MCCAIN TO WIN THE GOP NOMINATION
THE ASTUTE BLOGGERS —
The Dems really thought Iraq was lost and that McCain would NOT get the nomination, and that they'd be running against Romney. That's why they told the truth and said all those nice things about McCain: they thought they could get him to switch parties. But they were wrong about Iraq and McCain, and that's why we have a close race even though the economy is shaky. McCain was right about Iraq - and prescient about Fannie Mae: he proposed tightening controls in it in 2005, but his Fannie Mae proposal was blocked by the Democrats. The Democrats tried ...
