Fox News: "Historians Pretty Much Agree" That FDR Prolonged the Great Depression
Open Left - Front Page —
I appeared on Fox News to discuss both the Blagojevich flap and the imminent economic recovery package from the Obama administration. You can watch the clip here. As you'll see, on that latter issue, Fox News is starting its campaign to stop Obama's big spending plan by stating - as assumed fact - that "historians pretty much agree" that Franklin Roosevelt prolonged the Great Depression, and that therefore, Obama shouldn't try another New Deal.
When I say Fox News' assertion about historians is patently false, they literally laugh at me as if I've said something so clearly untrue, something Americans supposedly assume is so obviously stupid, that it's ...

The Forgotten Math: Pre-WWII New Deal Saw Biggest Drop In Unemployment Rate in American History

Cross-posted from the Campaign for America's Future
On Christmas Eve, I appeared on Fox News to discuss the upcoming economic recovery package, only to be told that FDR's New Deal "prolonged the Great Depression" (you can watch the clip here). This is the latest consevative talking point - one specifically aimed at stopping President Obama and the new Congress from passing a New Deal-sized package of public spending.
And so after appearing on Fox, I decided to devote my first newspaper column in the New Year to looking into whether conservatives have any shred of evidence to support their claim that the New Deal prolonged the Great Depression. And what do ...

NYT Joins In Debunking Wingnuttia's Anti-FDR Nonsense
Open Left - Front Page —
The New York Times on Sunday ran a big op-ed in which the author, Adam Cohen, leads off by citing my recent Fox News debate about FDR and the New Deal (you can watch that debate here). The piece pushes back on Wingnuttia's claim that the New Deal "prolonged the Great Depression" - a claim being spun up in order to stop Congress from passing a new New Deal today.
Last week, I wrote my syndicated newspaper column on this debate, and so it's good to see the pushback getting explicitly echoed by the Times. As I noted before, the pre-WWII New Deal era saw the single largest drop in the unemployment rate in American history, and the only way conservatives have ...
Sociopaths In America: Fox News Cartoon Characters and Bailed-Out CEOs
Open Left - Front Page —
A few months ago, I appeared on Fox News and was told by "anchor" (hereby "cartoon character") Greg Jarrett that "historians agree" that the New Deal exacerbated the Great Depression. It was a statement so factually inaccurate that it approached insanity. Now, the cartoon character makes an even bigger ass out of himself in a debate with Virg Bernero, the mayor of Lansing, Michigan. I encourage you to watch it:
Bernero makes a point that needs to be hammered over and over and over again - like he does - over the din of Fox News cartoon characters. How can anyone with a straight face demand blue-collar workers take huge pay and benefit cuts at a time ...
