Amanda Carpenter: Gibbs Defends National Mall Spending: Will Create Jobs
Townhall.com Blog's TownHall Blog — White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was asked to justify the $200 million included in the economic stimulus bill to revamp the National Mall. He said, with a straight face, it would create jobs. "Let's talk about the Mall for second," Gibbs said. "When we met on the first day of our presidency we were on the Mall, right? 1.8 million people stood on the Mall which happens to be the most visited national park we have, right? I think you can make a very credible case, and our economic team has, that reconditioning the National Mall will create jobs, probably though spending in small businesses." Roll the tape:

Video: White House pretty sure re-sodding the Mall will create jobs or something
Hot Air » Top Picks — Video: White House pretty sure re-sodding the Mall will create jobs or something posted at 9:20 pm on January 27, 2009 by Allahpundit Send to a Friend | Share on Facebook | printer-friendly Via Breitbart . And to think, I once imagined The One’s jobs plan would involve little more than makework duties like cleaning parks. Actually, the Mall funding’s just a tiny part of the stimulus — $200 million out of what’s now approaching $900 billion — but, just like they did with the contraception stuff , the GOP’s seized on it as a particularly media-friendly illustration of how much pork’s in the bill. The Blue Dogs are ...

The Most Transparent Administration Ever
Weekly Standard Blog — As late as Friday last week, few in Washington had any idea that the Obama administration was going to end production of the F-22. The administration had defended hundreds of millions of dollars to re-sod the national mall as part of their stimulus spending, who would've thought they would halt production of the nation's premiere air-to-air fighter in a sudden spasm of fiscal responsibility? The Lexington Institute's Rebecca Grant tries to figure out how the Air Force got blindsided by the Obama administration's termination of the program: Many applauded President Obama’s decision to retain Bush’s Secretary of Defense to ensure ...

Veto for F-22? Not Likely
Weekly Standard Blog — Politico reports the threat from the White House. I'm not buying it. The Senate Armed Services Committee is in a closed door mark-up of the defense authorization bill, and the White House is obviously concerned that they're going to follow the lead of the House Armed Services Committee, which jammed more than $300 million back into the defense budget as a down payment on 12 more F-22s. Now Carl Levin can tell the Dems on that committee that it'd be a waste of time to follow suit, but does anybody believe that President Barack Obama is going to use his first veto on a defense budget that he thinks spends $300 million too much on fighter jets? Really? ...
