New McCain Ad Hits Biden, Airs Footage Of Him Saying He'd Run With McCain
TPM Election Central —
The McCain campaign is already out with a tough new spot hitting Joe Biden, Obama's new running mate, and airing quotes from the primary where Biden questioned Obama's readiness to lead:
The ad, which will run in "key states," quotes a moderator during a Dem primary debate reading Biden his own earlier quotes, including one where he opined that Obama wasn't yet ready for the presidency and added that "the presidency is not something that lends itself to on the job training."
"I stand by that statement," Biden said. Then the ad twists the knife by airing this Biden quote about ...

Ensuring that the network and cable news coverage of Barack Obama's vice presidential announcement includes their oppo, John McCain McCain's campaign is going up on the air with an featuring Joe Biden praising his GOP colleague and questioning whether the Democrat is ready for the White House.
It's a simple ad that really writes itself: two clips, one from an interview the other from a primary debate, that help underscore their central theme. First, that Obama is not up to the presidency and would require, in Biden's words, "on the job training." Further -- and this clips is where it helps ...
McCain Rolls Out New Ad With Biden's Words

Just three hours after the Obama campaign sent out its text announcement, the McCain campaign rolled out its first ad this morning, using Senator Joe Biden’s own words during the primary season about Senator Barack Obama. From a debate in 2007, a clip shows Mr. Biden standing next to Mr. Obama. George Stephanopoulos of ABC News queried Mr. Biden: “You were asked, “Is he ready?” You said, ‘I think he can be ready but right now, I don’t believe he is. The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training.’ ” Mr. Biden: “I think that I stand by the statement.” In addition, the McCain ad uses footage from another TV ...

Early Reactions to Obama's Pick

Just as news broke early this morning of Sen. Barack Obama's choice of Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate, Sen. John McCain's campaign sent out a prepared atttack ad using a quote from Biden saying that Obama was not "ready" to be president. It was predictable given that the two men were primary opponents; more interesting will be the Obama campaign's response this morning. From a purely political perspective, no presidential campaign has ever handled the announcement of a running mate so deftly. The Obama campaign set a new standard that will be studied for years. Other reactions: New York Times: "Mr. Obama's ...
Obama picks Biden, McCain responds
Pundit Review —
Obama picks Biden, McCain responds Joe Biden, I think, wll be a mixed blessing for Obama. On paper, he brings things Obama desperately needs, like experience, particularly foreign policy experience. In reality, Biden’s strengths often end up as weaknesses. Anyone who has spent 30+ years in the Senate loves the sound of their own voice. They are used to pontificating. For reference, see John Kerry’s 2004 campaign. Biden likes to talk tough, and he could be a good surrogate on the attack against the Republicans. Given Biden’s longstanding admiration for McCain, I think we will see the Obama-Biden ticket working overtime to tie McCain’s ...

Biden does bring one thing to the table that Obama lacks. That is the ability to talk off the cuff ad nauseum. This combined with a great deal more experience may in fact make that ticket stronger. That being said Biden also has a tendency toward foot in mouth disease that could flare at any moment. In an odd way this balances the democratic ticket. Obama could have done worse. Let us hope that McCain does well with his pick. Still I can’t get past the feeling that the whole country has been ripped off in this election. Some days there seems to be a real choice. One reason for a relatively late rollout, as I mentioned yesterday, is that there's simply no honeymoon in the current media cycle. What used to be considered second-day coverage popped the moment Biden was announced -- revisiting Biden's weaknesses, exploring the oppo, wondering about Obama's timing -- as did the McCain ad, above, taking Biden's harshest words about Obama's readiness and his kindest about McCain.
I'm not sure this was deliberate, but a lot of the instant negatives are now burning themselves out late Friday night and early Saturday morning -- when few people are consuming media.

Seriously, my initial take on BO picking Biden is that from a political perspective (trying not to be too partisan here) he was probably the best of the bunch being considered if you take into account the experience factor.
