Yesterday, our own Matt Yglesias appeared MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show to discuss recent conservative obstructionism of the stimulus package:
YGLESIAS: There’s a lot of business tax cuts in there, which were put in with the idea of making it more palatable to Republicans, that I think most Democrats and most progressives don’t think are the best possible policy. And if Republicans aren’t going support it no matter what you do, then it makes a lot of sense to look at putting more infrastructure projects in, look at more tax cuts weighted at working people.

I think the House Republicans made clear that several concessions were made to them both in advance and during the debate over the bill, still none of them voted for it. You can see that as a party as an institution, the Republicans and the conservative movement aren’t really interested in cooperating.

Televid star Matt Yglesias often makes the argument that, bad as Republican prospects seem today, the can swiftly reverse if the electorate thinks the country is still doing poorly come election time in 2010 or 2012. But Daniel Larison makes me think that’s not necessarily true , given the example of the British Conservative Party since the fall of John Major. Boiled down: A combination of a lack of credibility, lack of an imaginative and relevant agenda, poor leadership, terrible public relations and backing an overwhelmingly unpopular war ensured that the Tories gained no traction despite increasing discontent with Blair’s government.
