McCain Adviser Says Northern Virginia Not "Real" Virginia
Political Punch —
Previous | Main McCain Adviser Says Northern Virginia Not "Real" Virginia October 18, 2008 3:17 PM It might be a good idea for the folks from the McCain campaign to take a day off, take a breath, and then return to work. Republicans unaffiliated with the campaign tell me the "bunker" mentality there is really starting to hurt them. To wit: McCain senior adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer on MSNBC today."As a proud resident of Oakton, Virginia, I can tell you that the Democrats have just come in from the District of Columbia and moved into northern Virginia," Pfotenhauer said, speaking of Democratic gains in that part of the state. "And that's really ...
McCain adviser: Northern Va not the "real Virginia.”
Jonathan Martin's Blog —
On the same day that John McCain appeared in Woodbridge, Va. - in the heart of of the state's fast-growing Washington exurbs -- one of his advisers appeared on TV to say that the region was not "real Virginia."
Given a chance to immediately walk back her statement, Nancy Pfotenauer declined.
Responded MSNBC's Kevin Corke: "All right. I’m just going to let you -- you’re aware of that one. I’m just saying."

McCain Still Leads in "Real Virginia"
Taegan Goddard's Political Wire —
On MSNBC, a top aide to John McCain said the Republican presidential
nominee "still has a strong chance of winning the state because of his
support in 'real Virginia,' the downstate areas far removed in distance

part of the state," the AP reports. The host asked Nancy Pfotenhauer "if she wanted to retract the comment" but she declined. Politico notes that Northern VIrginia "is home to a third of the state's voters."

McCain Surrogate: We're Winning In "Real Virginia"
TPM Election Central —
Appearing earlier today on MSNBC, McCain surrogate Nancy Pfotenhauer gave an interesting response to poll data showing that the campaign is trailing in Virginia: They're actually winning in "Real Virginia," which is the part of the state outside of Northern Virginia that is "more Southern in nature":
This seems to be in line with Sarah Palin's declaration that the conservative areas where she campaigns are the "Real America," and also hearkens back to John McCain's bother Joe McCain calling Virginia's Democratic strongholds of Arlington and Alexandria "Communist country." ...

Yes, Virginia, You Are Obama's Firewall
FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right —
Suppose that instead of a relatively decisive win by Barack Obama on Election Day, we instead have a very close election. Wish state might the McCain campaign really, really wish that they hadn't insulted? I'll give you a hint. It's not technically a state, but rather, a commonwealth. Five separate polls of Virginia have been released within the past 48 hours. Zogby has Obama ahead by 7 points there, the Washington Post by 8, SurveyUSA by 9, Public Policy Polling also by 9, and Virgnia Commonwealth University by 11. Virginia, with 13 electoral votes, is a bit more electorally ...
