Five Reasons to Love Dr. Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon General
Politics Daily —
Filed under: Democrats, Barack Obama, Featured Stories, Humor, Obama AdministrationWith the news today that Barack Obama has offered the job of Surgeon General to CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta, I thought it might be helpful if I pitched in with some quick bullet points to smooth over any opposition to the pick. Sure, there may be some naysayers, like Michael Moore, but it should be obvious to anyone that Gupta is the right man for this job. Here are five good things about the pick, in case you're not convinced: #5: No matter how many people die, he can't be President - The Surgeon General is not in the ...

Sanjay Gupta, Obama's Politically Incorrect Surgeon General
Weekly Standard Blog —
So, America's most telegenic, Indian-American neurosurgeon/family man/anchorman will be America's next surgeon general. None of C. Everett Koop's stern demeanor and exceptional facial hair or Joycelyn Elders' tendency toward the most awkward national public health conversations ever. Not for Obama.
It's a smart political choice— one that puts an undeniably smart, young, minority figure in a place of prominence who reflects Obama's own perceived vibrancy.
It's also an encouraging choice when it comes to the politics of public health. In my experience, watching and reading Gupta, he's a fair man who tells the truth about health issues, even when the truth runs ...

I'm ambivalent about the possible selection of Dr. Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon General. He seems like a very bright, earnest fellow, but his, and CNN's cavalier treatment of Michael Moore following the release of "Sicko" was pretty tasteless. Here's the video of the Moore/Gupta debate on Larry King: Gupta came across, to me, as fanatically nit-picky, and his smug dismissal of Moore was obvious. Granted, Moore can be overbearing, but his points were never really in dispute, just parsed to death. Gupta objected to Moore's using different sources for different statistics: he used a BBC report for the per capita ...
"The trouble with Sanjay Gupta," says Paul Krugman, is seen in the way he "mugged" Michael Moore.
Althouse —
I know, you're thinking: If that's the trouble, bring it on. But let's read what Krugman has to say: So apparently Obama plans to appoint CNN’s Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon General. I don’t have a problem with Gupta’s qualifications. But I do remember his mugging of Michael Moore over Sicko. You don’t have to like Moore or his film; but Gupta specifically claimed that Moore “fudged his facts”, when the truth was that on every one of the allegedly fudged facts, Moore was actually right and CNN was wrong. What bothered me about the incident was that it was what Digby would call Village behavior: Moore is an outsider, he’s uncouth, so he ...
Krugman on the day Sanjay Gupta mugged Michael Moore
AMERICAblog News| A great nation deserves the truth —
Krugman points out that CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the man Obama is considering for Surgeon General, conducted an on-the-air mugging of Michael Moore that turned out to be absolutely false. From Krugman: I don’t have a problem with Gupta’s qualifications. But I do remember his mugging of Michael Moore over Sicko. You don’t have to like Moore or his film; but Gupta specifically claimed that Moore “fudged his facts”, when the truth was that on every one of the allegedly fudged facts, Moore was actually right and CNN was wrong. by David E | (Visited 45 times) Sanjay No surprise that Mr. Sheri Annis would be delighted. “For a few seconds, I was puzzled by the notion of Sanjay Gupta as surgeon general. He’s a real-live neurosurgeon, yes, but I primarily think of him as a television guy: a CNN host and contributor to the “CBS Evening News” and “60 Minutes.” But as I thought about it, the idea made sense. What does a surgeon general do? He’s a television salesman for health policy. (Gupta once told me that doing TV isn’t brain surgery–it’s harder.) He would give the administration a smooth broadcast presence, the knowledge of medical professional, a top aide of Indian descent and the panache of one of ...
Krugman & Newsbusters Don't Approve of Gupta Pick
Political Punch —
Previous | Main Krugman & Newsbusters Don't Approve of Gupta Pick January 07, 2009 12:40 PM Nobel Prize-winning liberal New York Times columnist Paul Krugman doesn't seem a fan of Dr. Sanjay Gupta -- President-elect Barack Obama's pick to be Surgeon General -- because of an interview Gupta did with Michael Moore about Moore's film about the health care industry in the U.S., "Sicko." "Gupta specifically claimed that Moore 'fudged his facts'," Krugman writes, "when the truth was that on every one of the allegedly fudged facts, Moore was actually right and CNN was wrong." As USA Today covered in 2007 , Gupta in a report erroneously accused Moore of saying ...

So, word is that Obama is eyeing CNN’s Sanjay Gupta for Surgeon General. Well, on the one hand, I can understand “eyeing” Gupta for … well … just about anything. After all, I did include the good doctor on my list of “Hot Talking Heads” a few years back.
And, ya gotta admit, the man is easy on ...
Dr. Sanjay Gupta: credibility for Surgeon General is different from TV credibility
BuzzFlash.org - Progressive News and Commentary with an Attitude | Fight Ignorance: Read BuzzFlash —
A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS by Chad Rubel Have we reached the point where the TV helps pick out a president's advisers? Dr. Sanjay Gupta has been the trusted medical expert on "the most trusted name in news." And he is apparently Obama's pick for Surgeon General. Yes, Dr. Gupta is a neurosurgeon and has a lot of experience being on television. Is that enough to be Surgeon General? The two most famous SGs are C. Everett Koop and Jocelyn Elders. Koop still makes his mark, ironically on television, hawking Life Alerts. And we remember Elders more for masturbation than anything ...

Krugman brings the weight of his influence to bear on the hotly-contested topic of health care, alerting the new administration to foreseeable pitfalls and hoping to cast doubt on where a few of the new administration's appointments may be headed. In his post, he criticizes Gupta for smearing Michael Moore in a public debate on the Larry King Live program and others. Krugman rightly suggests that Gupta ...

If Surgeon General is a Spokesman for Good Health, Gupta May Be Fit
Sanjay Gupta’s wide fan base lends support for his role as the next surgeon general, but debate continues over what the role of surgeon general should be.

Gupta, a practicing neurosurgeon, assistant professor of neurosurgery and chief medical analyst for CNN, is expected to become the nation’s next surgeon general.
The position would make him the uniformed head of the 6,000-member Commissioned Corps of ...

Look, it's one thing to try to establish some kind of spirit of bipartisanship. I'm not with those who are clinging to the idea that Barack Obama's embrace of people like Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at his inauguration, or his plan to make CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta the next Surgeon General is some kind of head fake. I always knew that Obama was basically a centrist with an annoying tendency towards capitulation to the right, but the dearth of serious progressives in his Cabinet when combined with the kind of outreach he's doing to wingnuts doesn't bode well for any kind of significant change. ...
