StephenC This is an inspiring piece of journalism. It is balanced, well thought out, beautifully constructed and eloquently communicated. The message may take some time to get through to the narrow minded people, but this kind of thing can really make a difference.
In the UK, we are missing this kind of journalism – with comments from the heart. Although we have some brilliant TV and radio presenters, it often comes down to a straightforward “piece to camera” or an argumentative interview that is supposedly coming up with the “truth”.

I'm involved in a lot of things and I'm on a lot of lists. One of them is the Democracy for America State Leaders. A notice came through today about protest rallies that are being held around the country on November 15th.
The rally in Seattle will be at Volunteer Park starting at 10:30am. This is a timed event with synchronized events going on ...

Shakesville —
Once, if my memory serves me well, my life was a banquet where every heart revealed itself, where every wine flowed. One evening I took Beauty in my arms - and I thought her bitter - and I insulted her. I steeled myself against justice. I fled. O witches, O misery, O hate, my treasure was left in your care! I have withered within me all human hope. With the silent leap of a sullen beast, I have downed and strangled every joy. (Rimbaud from the beginning of A Season in Hell.) The morning readings might depart; so humor me for now. I have moments of doubt and 19th century French poets resonate with the ...

Keith Olbermann has gotten on my nerves in the past several months, but this is something with which I wholeheartedly agree:
Gay Marriage and YOU: Keith Olbermann's Excellent Statement
culturekitchen - fresh dissent served daily —
Don't have much to add to this except I am also a straight man from a family of straight folks who support Marriage Equality and just don't get this whole homophobic anti-gay marriage movement:
What I don't understand is how two consenting adults loving each other threatens anyone else? My marriage isn't threatened if gays can marry!

Bitch. Ph.D. —
Please watch this video. Even if you think Olbermann is shrill or annoying or sexist (all of which he can be at times). I think, or at least I hope fervently, that what he's said here will catch fire as a defense of gay marriage that echoes in discourse all over the country. It's tempting to characterize the fight for gays to marry as a question of fairness, because denying marriage to an entire group of people is so very fundamentally unfair. And it is, in a very real sense, a question of fairness. But I think the legalistic defense of gay marriage has sort of outlived its usefulness. ...

Last Thursday night, when Rachel wanted some expert opinion, she talked to bloggers - Steve Benen and Nate Silver. Nate thinks there might be something funny going on in the Alaska vote count. I really thought old Hindraker had already reached the depths of stupidity when he wrote that adoring post about Bush's wonderfulness, but he seems to have surpassed himself with his advice to Obama to be a better speaker by following Bush's example. Ahem. (Or this, or this.) Kevin Drum wonders why right-wingers persist in pushing the idea that the New Deal didn't completely cure the First Great Republican Depression, since economists have ...

This has been on a number of blogs, but in case any of you haven't seen it, Keith Olbermann had a great Special Comment last night on Proposition 8: Meanwhile, the Courage Campaign is already organizing to repeal it (via my brother Phil). Definitely not over.
Once a Local Legal Battle, Is Prop 8 On Its Way to 'Net-Fueled Cultural Moment?
techPresident —
Backers of California's Proposition 8, which enshrined a ban on same-sex marriages in the state constitution, scored a narrow victory on November 4th, winning 52.3% of the vote. The immediate impact in California is huge: the invalidation of 18,000 marriages. But that vote didn't put an end to the fierce debate, not even close. People have been protesting Prop 8's success in Los Angeles, San Diego, and, as the LA Times put it, "even Modesto." What was largely a state legal battle seems to be morphing into a national cultural moment, helped along by the web, including Facebook, MySpace, and YouTube.
