Have I the right to hold you
SteveAudio —
Friend and L.A. blogger Dante Atkins and his brother David have produced a great "No On 8" video for the Courage Campaign. No other commentary is needed: Interestingly, my wife Pam is in Palm Springs this weekend, celebrating the marriage of her cousin Joy to her long-time partner Shelley. Our best wishes and love to the newlyweds.
All America's choked up inside
The Sideshow —
Vince Bugliosi says George Walker Bush is guilty of murder. The evidence is overwhelming, it's open-and-shut. Bugliosi reckons the best state for a conviction is Vermont, but thinks Bush deserves the death penalty. One thing in this interview that rang my chimes was his anger at the way the smug bastard sent thousands of kids to get maimed and killed and kill a million or so others and was laughing and grinning and having a good time through it all. Among the many things I will never forgive him for is the fact that, on the night he launched the invasion of Iraq, when he was asked how he felt, he said, "I feel good." "Avoiding a ...

Yesterday ”TheCall," a 12-hour rally to boost support for Yes on 8, which would eliminate the right of gays and lesbians to marry in California, was held in San Diego’s Qualcomm stadium. The festival of fundies believe they will save marriage, the homosexuals and the state of California by communing during the movement’s 40 days of ...
My new ad against Prop 8 directly hits the LDS church
Firedoglake —
Last week, I wrote a script for an ad against California's Proposition 8, would would eliminate hard-earned and long-denied marriage rights for LGBT couples.
I didn't expect anything to come of it, but my brother and his girlfriend went to work producing it. They recruited an excellent cast, including Bridget McManus. Rick Jacobs of the Courage Campaign gladly let us use his house for shooting. And my best friend directed and edited it. It was shot this past Thursday and edited Friday. And here it is: ...
Digging Down Ballot-- Beyond Obama And Even Beyond Prop 8
DownWithTyranny! —
I always try to make sure I'll be in town for election day; I like to participate in the shared renewal of our democratic compact with my neighbors. An absentee ballot doesn't do it for me. I don't have to tell any DWT readers that this blog has been more concerned with Senate and House races around the country-- and with Obama's struggle to wrest control of the executive branch from the grip of reactionaries determined to hold onto it-- than with the immediate concerns of my Los Angeles neighbors. Every morning I walk around the hill I live on, a two mile trek that brings me past scores of houses with Obama signs and No on 8 ...
Prop 8: The Ad That Upset the Mormon Church
Crooks and Liars —
(full disclosure: I work for the Courage Campaign) "Home Invasion" was produced by two of our friends in the progressive movement -- netroots activists and brothers Dante Atkins and David Atkins. This 60-second ad satirically skewers the Mormon Church's dictation of public policy to Californians. We will be airing on CNN, MSNBC and Comedy Central in selected markets on Election Day. Let's just say, the Mormon Church is not pleased and the Salt Lake City media is all over this ad. They are uncomfortable being in the spotlight, which they richly deserve for being the biggest force behind the Yes on 8 campaign. BTW they have been planning a fight like ...
Rick Jacobs: Mormon Church on Prop 8: We Oppose Civil Rights (but don't tell)
Politics on HuffingtonPost.com —
Harry Truman famously said, "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen." President-Prophet Thomas Monson, the leader of the Mormon Church, clearly does not read history. If he did, he'd know that he and his apostles could not stand behind the stone walls and parapets of the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City, shoveling cash and lies into California without consequences. The Mormon Church's members have contributed some $22 million into a vicious campaign here in California that seeks to strip rights from same-sex couples, making them permanent second-class citiznes. President-Prophet Monson seems to like "separate but equal," but ...

Is This Discriminatory?
The Mahablog —
Maggie Gallagher is shocked that people would make this nasty ad about the Mormons. As Andy Sullivan points out, Mormons have put considerable money and effort to pass Proposition 8 in California, which would ban same sex marriage. Mormons are not the only people to support Prop 8, however, so I don’t think it was necessary to call them out.
I’m of two minds on this. If a religious faction is trying to change laws to suit its doctrines, then I think it’d better be prepared to take hits from people who disagree with them. This is ...

Most Remarkable Political Ad Ever?
Power Line —
It's a contender. In California, Proposition 8 is on the ballot. It is a response to a decision of the California Supreme Court creating a right to gay marriage. The proposition, as summarized by the California Attorney General's office, "Changes the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California" and "Provides that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
This ad is being run by opponents of Proposition 8:
In this election season we've seen a number of over-the-top ads, but this one may take ...

I'm not a political scientist. I don't run a website or have even cursory knowledge of basic html. I don't own any poster board. I also don't hold political office or a union card, I haven't been tortured, and I am a straight white dude who's getting married next month. I am perhaps unqualified to be holding forth on the state of activism and messaging in play across the broad fight for progress in this country.
Though from the looks of the blogosphere, I am not uniquely unqualified. And hey, I'm Jewish, so I know a little something about laws that rob certain citizens of their rights. I learned about them in Hebrew School, where they'll also let ...
