Cindy McCain: Palin knows foreign policy because ‘Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia.’
Think Progress —
Today on ABC’s This Week, Cindy McCain tried to rebut the criticism that Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) has no national experience by taking a talking point from Fox’s Steve Doocy. McCain pointed to the fact that Palin’s state is near Russia:
STEPHANOPOULOS: But she has no national security experience.
McCAIN: You know, the experience that she comes from is what she’s done in government, and remember, Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia. It’s not as if she doesn’t understand what’s at stake here.

The Proximity Factor
Matthew Yglesias —
Alaska is close to Russia! Now an official talking point.
This is absurd on its face, but note that it’s also barely true. An uninhabited part of Alaska is near an (also uninhabited) part of Alaska, but Alaska’s Anchorage population center is hundreds of miles from the Bering Straight. There are no roads going to the part of Alaska that’s near Russia. Has Palin ever negotiated with Russian officials about anything? Why don’t they try Canada? ...
I live near a courthouse, so that makes me a judge, right?

God damn, they really must believe that Americans are morons. Make. It. Fucking. Stop.
Proximity to Russia is irrelevant
Political Animal —
PROXIMITY TO RUSSIA IS IRRELEVANT.... On Friday, my friend Kevin Drum came up with a clever little way to preemptively mock Republicans' claims about Sarah Palin's foreign policy experience. "Isn't Alaska a central front in the new Cold War? That's foreign policy experience right there!" Kevin joked. If only the Republican establishment wasn't serious about this. For example, Fox News' Steve Doocy, with a straight face, insisted , "[T]he other thing about her, she does know about international relations because she is right up there in Alaska right next door to Russia." (This led Jon Stewart to call Doocy a " moron .") This morning, Cindy McCain made ...
The National Security Defense
The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan —
Even Jonah Goldberg realizes the commander-in-chief of Alaska's National Guard is "really lame" for the party of Eisenhower. But the "Alaska-Is-Close-To-Russia" argument by Cindy McCain. I mean: seriously, guys. Is this an episode of South Park? Enjoy: ...
Palin’s Russia Experience
PoliBlog: A Rough Draft of my Thoughts —
This is the kind of thing that will, I expect, become an ongoing punchline.
When asked by George Stephanopoulos about Sarah Palin’s lack of foreign policy experience, Cindy McCain stated:
McCAIN: You know, the experience that she comes from is what she’s done in government, and remember, Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia. It’s not as if she doesn’t understand what’s at stake here.

Cindy McCain on Palin: she’s qualified because ‘Alaska is close to Russia’

It’s time for the GOP to fold its tent and go home. Some free advice: do not send Cindy McCain out on the Sunday talk shows to defend Sarah Palin (via Sully):
All the Obama campaign needs to do is air this one over and over. How far has the self-proclaimed party of national security fallen when this kind of messaging is deemed acceptable.
Rice Won't Weigh In on Palin's Experience
News —
Rice Won't Weigh In on Palin's Experience Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said she wouldn't address questions about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's (R) foreign policy experience in a recent interview with CNN. Liberals have questioned Palin's experience since she was named to the GOP ticket, though Cindy McCain suggested last week that Alaska's proximity to Russia gave Palin perspective on foreign policy matters, drawing more fire from Palin's critics. Rice said that, as secretary of state, she would not involve herself in the presidential race, even as CNN's Zain Verjee pressed her to comment on Palin's experience.
The Devil went down to Georgia
SteveAudio —
("Midnight Train to Georgia"-Gladys Knight & The Pips) Thankfully, the empty vessel that is Sarah Palin ruined John McCain's last chance for the Presidency. Sadly, though, she seems determined to continue her crusade for fame and power. Let's hope she has the same effect on the Republican Party as she did on McCain's candidacy. Like a good Party soldier, she's gone gone to Georgia to campaign against a real soldier, by supporting the truly awful Saxby Chambliss, who was never a soldier. The largest newspaper in Alaska says: Gov. Sarah Palin is putting her ...
