Killing School Choice in D.C.
The Corner on National Review Online —
Tuesday, February 24, 2009 [image] Killing School Choice in D.C. [Ramesh Ponnuru] You may have heard about contemporary liberals' rigid commitment to empiricism, emphasis on doing what works, and single-minded commitment to using the stimulus bill to revive the economy. I guess that we are just going to have to take it on faith that knifing school choice in the district is part of that laudable vision. Andrew Coulson explains ...
Democrat Omnibus Spending Bill Puts D.C. School Choice in Jeopardy
Weekly Standard Blog —
If you add up the stimulus bill, Obama's proposed foreclosure fix, and the omnibus spending bill House Democrats are preparing, the administration is kicking off its tenure by spending a whopping $1.4 trillion.
There's money for green golf carts. There's money for ACORN. There's money for weatherizing galore!
But there are some things the Democrat-controlled Congress will not countenance spending money on. Namely, Sakeithia, 12, Rashawn, 16, Paul, 11, Dominique, 14, Breanna, 9, Jordan, 17, Fransoir, 12, and De'Andre, 9.
They're all Washington, D.C. kids attending private schools thanks in part to a federally funded school-voucher ...
Liberals Wage War on 1,700 Poor D.C. Kids
RedState: Conservative News and Community —
The audacity of congressional Democrats is absolutely astonishing. Less than two months into the 111th Congress, they have made one of their top targets ending a popular scholarship program for 1,700 low-income D.C. students.
The $7,500 scholarships are the best thing that’s happened for District of Columbia students in the past decade — and one of the best investments Congress has made in education reform. Demand for the scholarships is so high that there are four applicants for each voucher, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Don’t take my word for it. Listen to the words of scholarship recipients, who have turned ...

Congress Letting Kids Fail In Bailoutville
RedState: Conservative News and Community —
Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York has been a self-styled education mayor. He’s made all sorts of proposals and tried several different angles — some good some not so good — to improve the education of the kids of New York. He has, though, been a proponent of school choice and this advocacy looks to be a success, at least for the kids of Harlem’s District 5.
Recently District 5 sponsored the first ever Harlem Education Fair at which 5,000 parents and kids turned out to see what opportunities for school choice can be employed to improve their children’s education. 50 different schools, traditional as well as charter, competed for ...

Standing up for DC Kids
Wizbang —
Mary Katharine Ham attended a rally yesterday to save DC Opportunity Scholarships and got some really good pictures of some adorable kids. At least 1,300 school kids and several hundred adults (many of them single parents who had to get off work) gathered at Freedom Plaza to rally for the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program in Washington Wednesday. Funding for the program was cut by Congress this spring, and it must now be reauthorized by the D.C. Council and a heavily Democratic Senate to continue. The political road looks very rough, but these kids and their supporters are prepared to "fight, fight" to "put children first," as the chants of the day indicated. Former ...
Why do Democrats Hate Our Soldier’s Kids?
RedState: Conservative News and Community —
Last Friday the Wall Street Journal once again excoriated the president and his henchmen in that mis-educational system so larded with self-interested union thugs (and other Democrats) by pointing out how these ne’er-do-wells are attempting to kill the D.C. school voucher program that has done so much good for so many minority, inner city kids in the Nation’s capitol.
But the end of the editorial also pointed to the fact that Obama wants to perpetrate the same misdeeds against the educational opportunities of our soldier’s kids. It turns out that because the D.C. voucher program is such a success, military families are asking for a ...

Why should D.C. schoolkids listen to Obama?

Why should D.C. schoolkids listen to Obama? He didn’t listen to them. Would love to see this video played in schools as a follow-up to Obama’s speech. He’s all for educational values…except when he isn’t. Not forgotten:
