Barton: We Shouldn’t Regulate CO2 Because ‘It’s In Your Coca-Cola’ And ‘You Can’t Regulate God’
Think Progress — Yesterday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee began its markup of the American Clean Energy and Security Act. The work is expected to continue through the week, as Republicans plan to stall movement on the bill by offering more than 400 amendments. Discussing the bill on C-Span’s Washington Journal this morning, Rep. “Smokey Joe” Barton (R-TX) defended his head-in-the-sand approach to climate change by fundamentally misunderstanding the science, misstating the reality of carbon dioxide emissions, and mocking fuel-efficient cars. Some highlights: – “I would also point out that CO2, carbon dioxide, is not a ...

Talk about hot air...
Political Animal — TALK ABOUT HOT AIR.... If you missed it, Ali Frick had a great item yesterday on Rep. Joe Barton's (R-Exxon) appearance on C-SPAN to discuss global warming. Barton, one of Congress' most ardent pollution supporters, turned in a performance that was a classic for the genre. It's worth watching in full, but there were a couple of head-shaking quotes that stood out. Barton argued, for example, that carbon dioxide can't be a pollutant. "I am creating it as I talk to you," he said. "It's in your Coca-Cola, you're Dr. Pepper, your Perrier water. It is necessary for human life. It is odorless, colorless, tasteless, does not cause cancer, does not cause asthma." He added, ...

Josh Dorner: House GOP on Energy: All Hat, No Cattle
Politics on HuffingtonPost.com — As a fellow blogger wrote today, the minority on the House Energy & Commerce led by "Smokey Joe" Barton of Texas (R-Big Oil) turned out to be all hat and no cattle when it came to stopping the comprehensive clean energy jobs plan that passed the committee 33-25 last evening. But that of course didn't stop them from raising a ruckus in the meantime. With energy perhaps the only issue Dick Cheney hasn't come out of the woodwork to address, Barton and his fellow conservatives on the committee (save Mary Bono Mack of California, the sole Republican who voted for the plan) are picking up the slack when it comes to continuing the push for the Big Oil, Dirty Coal, and ...
