Oliver Willis —
This sort of says everything.
BBC: “In the Middle East, the sole of the foot is unclean, so pointing it at someone is insulting: when Iraqis vented their fury on the deposed Saddam Hussein in 2003, they beat his statue with their shoes.”
BBC: “”Going into someone’s house or a mosque, you would always take your shoes off first. Shoes are used to beat servants, thieves, prostitutes; it indicates servility. Were you to beat your children, this would be done with a stick or the hand, but never shoes.” ”

Informed Comment —
A journalist, Muntazir al-Zaidi of Baghdadiya Television, aimed two shoes at W. during a news conference in Baghdad during which Bush attempted to justify his invasion of Iraq. Baghdadiya, based in Cairo, Egypt, supports the Sunni Arab insurgents fighting the US and the al-Maliki government. Al-Zaidi shouted "This is a farewell kiss!" as he launched his size tens, then kept shouting "Dog, dog!" (In Arabic, it would be ibn al-kalb or son of a dog, equivalent to English s.o.b.; for color you can say 'son of a thousand dogs!') If you search shoes and Iraq, here is how google shows two BBC stories on December 14, five years apart: BBC NEWS | World | Middle ...

Iraqi journalist tosses shoes at George W. Bush:

Iraqis had begun tearing down portraits of Saddam and throwing shoes — a grave insult in the Arab world — and chipping away at the base of the statue with sledgehammers after a column of Marines advanced into the square Wednesday afternoon. ...
No More Mister Nice Blog — YEAH, THAT MIGHT MAKE YOU A BIT CRANKY About the shoe-throwing reporter: "This is a farewell kiss!" the man, identified as Muntadar al-Zaidi, a reporter with the Cairo-based network Al Baghdadia Television, yelled as he threw the shoes. Bush had to duck out of the way, and narrowly missed being hit.... Zaidi, colleagues said, was kidnapped by Shiite militiamen last year and was later released. And that's true -- here's the Reuters story from last year: An Iraqi TV journalist who was kidnapped last week in a busy Baghdad neighborhood said he was released unharmed before dawn on Monday. Muntazer al-Zaidi, a ...
