(AP) WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama sought to rally support for his domestic initiatives, while Sen. John McCain called for Americans to support Iranian election protesters. The one-time presidential rivals both cited the spirit of the nation's founders in their Fourth of July radio and Internet addresses.
Obama said an "unyielding spirit is what defines us as Americans" and led people during the nation's history to explore the West, persevere during the Depression and build a robust industrial economy.
"That is the spirit we are called to show once more," Obama said Saturday. "We are facing an array of challenges on a scale unseen ...

Obama uses holiday to slap down "naysayers"
Daily Kos —
If ever there were a holiday that seems expressly designed to display the gift with language possessed by the current President of the United States, Fourth of July would be it. And with this morning's weekly address, Barack Obama took full advantage of the opportunity presented, not just saluting America's peaks and victories, but reminding its citizens of the dark times and despair as well that the nation has overcome with what he called our "indomitable spirit." And in passages that echoed his campaign observations about the "unlikely story that is America," he reminded us of how this country, in many ways, a ...

Obama Recognizes Fourth Of July -- And Goes After His Naysayers
In this weekend's Presidential YouTube Address, President Obama paid tribute to the Independence Day Holiday, and the spirit of those who built America. Furthermore, he tied this into his own agenda on energy, health care and other issues, and against his critics who say he's doing too much:
"These naysayers have short memories," said Obama. "They forget that we, as a people, did not get here by standing pat in a time of change. We did not get here by doing what was easy. That is not how a cluster of 13 colonies became the United States of ...
Obama: America was not built by ‘naysayers.’
Think Progress —
President Obama devotes his address this week to remembering the “indomitable spirit of the first American citizens” who built this country and the lessons we can apply to the current challenges:
That is the spirit we are called to show once more. We are facing an array of challenges on a scale unseen in our time. We are waging two wars. We are battling a deep recession. And our economy – and our nation itself – are endangered by festering problems we have kicked down the road for far too long: spiraling health care costs; inadequate schools; and a dependence on foreign oil. [...]

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY.... The president's weekly multimedia addresses aren't usually worth noting, but in light of the holiday, I kind of like today's edition . After addressing education, health care, and energy policy, the Obama said, "These are some of the challenges that our generation has been called to meet. And yet, there are those who would have us try what has already failed; who would defend the status quo. They argue that our health care system is fine the way it is and that a clean energy economy can wait. They say we are trying to do too much, that we are moving too quickly, and that we all ought to just take a deep breath and scale back our goals. "These naysayers ...
William Bradley: Obama's Consequential First 4th: NoKo, AfPak, Iraq, Russia, Palin (Palin?!)
Politics on HuffingtonPost.com —
In his weekend video/radio address, President Barack Obama discussed the heritage of Independence Day and pushed his economic, energy, and health care agenda.
Quite a consequential first 4th of July as president for Barack Obama.
Not only did he have 20 of daughter Malia's schoolgirl friends over for a Camp David sleepover in honor of her 11th birthday on the 4th of July -- just wait till her "Independence Day," Dad -- he had a few other things on his plate, as well as the barbeque for military families and the fireworks show. Not counting his inherited worst economic crisis since the Great ...

For yesterday’s Saturday / July 4 presidential address, Barack Obama offered up a pretty tough political message based on his reading of history:
These are some of the challenges that our generation has been called to meet. And yet, there are those who would have us try what has already failed; who would defend the status quo. They argue that our health care system is fine the way it is and that a clean energy economy can wait.
