Obama Gallup approval drops below 50%

From NBC's Domenico MontanaroPresident Obama has now dropped, for the first time, below 50% approval in the Gallup poll. It's the second poll this week to show that result.
This puts Obama on par with Ronald Reagan, who also fell below 50% 10 months into the job -- and better than Bill Clinton, who fell below in his fourth month. Reagan was dealing with similar economic numbers.
For context, here's what we wrote about this when the possibility was first floated that Obama could fall below 50%...( read more )

Find more top political news, videos, and blogs on BeltwayBlips: White House, Barack Obama, Gallup Poll, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, Approval Ratings

'Going Rogue: An American Life' by Sarah Palin

The former vice presidential candidate's autobiography assigns plenty of blame but doesn't give much credit where it's due.
                         >

A particularly shrewd political analyst once remarked that Ronald Reagan's great strength as a candidate was that he was "a sincere phony." In the world of electoral realpolitik, that's a compliment.

How good was the Ft. Hood speech?

From NBC's Domenico MontanaroTom Ricks was unimpressed with President Obama's Fort Hood speech:

I think President Obama missed a major opportunity at Fort Hood on Tuesday. His speech was fine was far as it went -- but that wasn't very far. It felt very conventional, a bit rote and obligational, like Reagan on an off day, doing a state fair stopoff on the way to the Western White House. What I had hoped for was a passionate, engaged address that tackled political correctness in the same was as...( read more )

Find more top political news, videos, and blogs on BeltwayBlips: White House, Ronald Reagan, Barack Obama

Gates praises Reagan for 'circumspect' use of U.S. military

   Embedded video from CNN Video
WASHINGTON (CNN) – Defense Secretary Robert Gates praised President Ronald Reagan on Tuesday for being "circumspect" about putting American credibility or troops at risk in the absence of "a clear mission or strong odds of success."
Gates said Reagan "understood that erasing the impression of U.S. political and military weakness would ultimately reap diplomatic rewards and strategic breakthroughs."
Reagan's "willingness to use American power was a lesson that others would learn as well," Gates said at a Library of Congress event honoring Reagan's contribution to the fall of the Berlin Wall. "But President Reagan was circumspect about putting or keeping America's troops and America's credibility at risk without a clear mission or strong odds of success."
He wisely avoided a "direct and potentially catastrophic military conflict with the U.S.S.R.," Gates said. Instead, the president "expanded the containment playbook far beyond Europe and took the fight ...

Find more top political news, videos, and blogs on BeltwayBlips: White House, Robert Gates, Ronald Reagan, CNN, Afghanistan
